UPS systems:
The full form of UPS is “Uninterruptable Power Supply”. They act as a backup power supply for computers. The powering capacity of UPS is usually measured in volt-ampere. A normal computer uses 200 VA and during interruptions or power fluctuations, it gets efficient power supply from UPS which provides up to 1,000 VA.
Types of UPS:
There are four primary types of UPS. They are as follows:
- Standby UPS
- Standby ferroresonant UPS
- Line-interactive UPS
- Double conversion online UPS

- 5 . Textbook (A Quantitative Approach to Computer Architecture, 5th edition) Page 63: Exercise 1.4 1.4 [20-min/10-min/20-min] <1.5> Figure 1.23 presents the power consumption of several computer system components. In this exercise, we will explore how the hard drive affects power consumption for the system. [20] <1.5> Assuming the maximum load for each component, and a power supply efficiency of 80%, what wattage must the server’s power supply deliver to a system with an Intel Pentium 4 chip, 2 GB 240-pin Kingston DRAM, and one 7200 rpm hard drive? [10] <1.5> How much power will the 7200 rpm disk drive consume if it is idle roughly 60% of the time? . [20] <1.5> Given that the time to read data off a 7200 rpm disk drive will be roughly 75% of a 5400 rpm disk, at what idle time of the 7200 rpm disk will the power consumption be equal, on average, for the two disks?arrow_forward471. Effective overlap of operations of CPU and I/O devices, requires a proper mix of a. I/O bound jobs b. CPU bound jobs c. Memory bound jobs d. Balance of CPU and I/O jobsarrow_forwardSuppose the daytime processing load consists of 60% CPU activity and 40% disk activity. Your customers are complaining that the system is slow. After doing some research, you learn that you can upgrade your disks for $8,000 to make them 2.5 times as fast as they are currently. You have also learned that you can upgrade your CPU to make it 1.4 times as fast for $5,000. Q. Which would you choose to yield the best performance improvement for the least amount of money?arrow_forward
- 7.When a computer is offered for sale, one of itsadvertised characteristics is something such as“2.9 GHz.”What does this mean, and what does itmeasure?arrow_forwardFormulate the overall reliability of LCD display unit that consist of a display, backlighting panel and a number of circuit board with the following setup. Please include the model diagram in your answer.i)An LCD panel with hardware failure rate, λ 1ii)A backlighting board with 10 bulbs with individual bulb failure rate of λ 2but still considered good with 2 bulbs failuresiii)2 microprocessor boards A and B hooked up in parallel, each with totalcircuit board failure rate of λ 3arrow_forward10. - Digital memory comes in a variety of forms, including cache memory, random access memory (RAM), solid state drives (SSD), and hard disk drives (HDD). Computers include every one of them. Is it preferable for consumers to have only one memory standard, such as the many SSD sizes, or is there a value to having several standards? Is having many standards advantageous? Would things be simpler and less expensive for consumers if there was just one standard to follow?arrow_forward1. System A takes 80 seconds to run a program. The same program takes 50 seconds to run on a new system B. What is the speedup provided by B over A? What is the performance improvement (percentage of performance improvement) of B over A? 2. Anna designs a 2.5 GHz processor where two important programs, A and B, take one second each to execute. Each program has a CPI of 1.25. Elsa is tasked with designing the company's next-generation processor and she comes up with an idea that improves the CPI of A to 1.1 and the CPI of B to 0.9. But the idea is so complex that the processor can only be implemented with a cycle time of 0.5 ns. Does Elsa's new processor out-perform Anna's processor on program A? How about on program B? 3. A program executes 200 billion instructions. It executes on an IBM processor that has an average CPI of 1.2 and a clock frequency of 4.0 GHz. How many seconds does the program take to execute? What is the cycle time of this IBM processor? Assume that an ARM processor…arrow_forwardSuppose your company has decided that it needs to make certain busy servers 30% faster. Processes in the workload spend 70% of their time using the CPU and 30% on I/O. In order to achieve an overall system speedup of 30%:Q.) How much faster does the CPU need to be?arrow_forward
- As a computer maker, make high-quality computers with fast processing rates accessible to everyone. This is a difficult job.Is it possible to create a high-quality, fast computer for a low price?arrow_forwardA local company, Motorola Sdn. Bhd. is producing a new high technology product which is power quality monitoring system. In order to complete the system, as an engineer at the company, you are required to design a MC68000 microprocessor based system which needs to be interfaced with 64kBytes RAM and 262144 bits ROM. The ROM starting address is $400000 and the RAM starting address is $FFOOOO. In addition, a partial address with decoder circuit is also needed to be considered in your system. Before initiating the project, please provide the information as follow ; a)Determine the number of chips and memory size used for RAM and RAM in Kbyte unitb)Design address decoding tablec)Sketch the address decoding circuit (both even and odd decoder must be included)arrow_forwardA local company, Motorola Sdn.
