Textbook Problem

Identify a genetic condition that is not found by maternal or newborn screening.

Summary Introduction

To identify: A genetic condition that is not found by maternal or newborn screening.

Introduction: Genetic disorder is a condition caused by any abnormalities in genetic content of an individual. Genetic diseases are mainly caused by the single-base mutation. Single base mutations are capable of imparting biochemical, functional, and structural abnormalities in the organism.

Explanation

Some infants require neonatal intensive care even though they born at term. This is due to cardiac, genetic, or some chromosomal abnormalities. Newborn screening is a practice that is used to test all the newborns for certain disorders and conditions that can affect their normal development. These test are done in initial days of their birth.

The genetic condition that is not found by maternal or newborn screening is as follows:

Cleft lip and palate:

Cleft lip occurs due to the incomplete fusion of the nasomedial or intermaxillary process. These processes start during the fourth week of embryonic development. Cleft lip mainly affects the lip. It causes the structures of the mouth and face to develop without the normal restraints of encircling lip muscles. The facial cleft can also affect the nasal cartilages, external nose, nasal septum, and alveolar processes. Cleft palate is associated with cleft lip. It may also take place without cleft lip. In the cleft palate, the split (cleft) affects only on the uvula and soft palate or may broaden further to the nostril and involve the hard palate and the maxillary alveolar ridge. The teeth present in the cleft palate may be absent or deformed.

Congenital anomalies:

A congenital abnormality is also known as birth defects. This can cause the structural or functional anomalies...
