Answer to Problem 1E

A vector in the plane is a line segment with an assigned direction. In Figure I, The vector has initial point A and terminal point B.

Explanation of Solution

From the given figure I, it is observed that the vector u with an arrow to show the direction. The arrow starts at the initial point and ends at the terminal point. The given vector is denoted by u=AB.

Hence, the initial point is A and terminal point is B for the vector u.

The vector 2u is double the magnitude of vector u in the same direction and the vector u+v is the diagonal of the parallelogram formed by the vectors u and v starting at the initial point.

Precalculus: Mathematics for Calculus - 6th Edition, Chapter 9.1, Problem 1E

Figure 1 shows the vectors 2u and u+v. The direction of 2u is same as the direction of u.

To fill: A vector in a coordinate plane is expressed by using components. In Figure II, the vector has initial point ____ and the terminal point _____. In component form we write u = ____ and v = _____. Then 2u = ___ and u+v = ___.

Answer to Problem 1E

A vector in a coordinate plane is expressed by using components. In Figure II, the vector has initial point (2,1) and the terminal point (4,3). In component form we write u = 2,2 and v = 3,6. Then 2u = 4,4 and u+v = 1,8.

Explanation of Solution

Formula used:

The formula to calculate the component form of the vector u in the plane with initial point P(x1,y1) and Q(x2,y2) is ,

u=x2x1,y2y1 (1)

Calculation:

From the given Figure II, it is observed that the initial and terminal points of the vector u are (2,1) and (4,3) and initial and terminal points of the vector v are (6,1) and (3,7).

The initial point is (2,1) and terminal point is (4,3) for the vector u.

Substitute 2 for x1, 4 for x2, 1 for y1 and 3 for y2 in equation (1) to calculate u.

u=42,31=2,2

Substitute 6 for x1, 3 for x2, 1 for y1, 7 for y2 and v for u in the equation (1) to obtain v.

v=36,71=3,6

In component form the value of u is 2,2 and the value of v is 3,6.

Substitute 2,2 for u and 3,6 for v to calculate 2u and u+v.

2u=22,2=4,4

Thus,

u+v=2,2+3,6=23,2+6=1,8

Hence, the initial point is (2,1) and terminal point is (4,3) for the vector u, the value of u is 2,2 and the value of v is 3,6 and 2u=4,4 and u+v=1,8.
