Chapter 9.5, Problem 44E
One of the reasons health care costs have been rising rapidly in recent years is the increasing cost of malpractice insurance for physicians. Also, fear of being sued causes doctors to run more precautionary tests (possibly unnecessary) just to make sure they are not guilty of missing something (Reader’s Digest, October 2012). These precautionary tests also add to health care costs. Data in the DATAfile named LawSuit are consistent with findings in the Reader’s Digest article and can be used to estimate the proportion of physicians over the age of 55 who have been sued at least once.
- a. Formulate hypotheses that can be used to see if these data can support a finding that more than half of physicians over the age of 55 have been sued at least once.
- b. Use Excel and the DATAfile named LawSuit to compute the sample proportion of physicians over the age of 55 who have been sued at least once. What is the p-value for your hypothesis test?
- c. At α = .01, what is your conclusion?

The article "Americans are 'Getting the Wrong Idea' on Alcohol and Health"† reported that observational studies in recent years that have concluded that moderate drinking is associated with a reduction in the risk of heart disease may be misleading. The article refers to a study conducted by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention that showed that moderate drinkers, as a group, tended to be better educated, wealthier, and more active than nondrinkers.
Explain why the existence of these potentially confounding variables prevents drawing the conclusion that moderate drinking is the cause of reduced risk of heart disease. (Select all that apply.)
Someone who is more active is more likely to avoid healthier food.
Someone who is wealthier is more likely to purchase healthier food.

While obesity has generally been linked with chronic disease and disability, researchers argue that it may also affect wages. In other words, the body mass index (BMI) of an employee is a predictor for salary. (A person is considered overweight if his/her BMI is at least 25 and obese if BMI exceeds 30.) The accompanying data file includes salary (in $1,000s) for 30 college-educated men with their respective BMI and a dummy variable that represents 1 for a white man and 0 otherwise. A concern voiced by critics is that the maintenance may be less carefully done, so that outsourcing creates a safety hazard. In addition, flight delays are often due to maintenance problems, so one might look at government data on percent of major maintenance outsourced and percent of flight delays blamed on the airline to determine if these concerns are justified. This was done, and data from 2005 and 2006 appeared to justify the concerns of the critics. Do more recent data still support the concerns of the critics? Data from 2014 is in the given table.
