For Problems 1-6, Use Pascal’s triangle to help expand each of the following.

( x y ) 5

To determine

To expand:

(xy)5.

Explanation of Solution

To expand (xy)5, first find the exponents for x and y on a term-by-term basis.

Let x=y.

The exponents of x begin with the exponent of 4 and decrease term by term by 1 until the last term becomes 1, i.e. the exponent of x is 0.

The exponents of y begin with 0 and increase term by term by 1 until the last term contains the power of 4.

Then, the coefficients of each term can be found from Pascal’s triangle.

To form Pascal’s triangle, start and end each row with 1.

All other entries result from adding the two numbers in the row immediately above, one number to the left and one number to the right.
