Textbook Problem

7 - 1 8 Graphing with the Graphing Calculator Determine an appropriate viewing rectangle for the equation, and use it to draw the graph.

y = 1 x 2 2 x

To determine

The appropriate viewing rectangle for the equation y=1x22x and use it to draw the graph.

Explanation

Given:

The given equation is,

y=1x22x

Approach:

The graph of the equation using graphing calculator in the given rectangular view is construct on the basis of the following steps:

Step 1: Press the key Y= on the graphing calculator and write the given equation, Y= screen in the graphing calculator is as shown below,

Figure (1)

Step 2: Press the key WINDOW on the graphing calculator and write the given rectangular view, WINDOW screen in the graphing calculator is as shown below,

Figure (2)

Step 3: Press the key GRAPH on the graphing calculator and view the graph obtained, GRAPH screen in the graphing calculator is as shown below,

Figure (3)

Calculation:

Let us try different viewing rectangle for the equation y=1x22x and select the appropriate window where graph can be viewed completely.

Case (a): let the viewing rectangle be [2,2] by [2,2].

Write the given equation in the graphing calculator,

y=1x22x

Start with the viewing rectangle [2,2] by [2,2].

Set,

Xmin=2Xmax=2Ymin=2Ymax=2

The result graph is as shown below,

Figure (4)

The resulting graph is not so clear, only some portion of the graph is visible. So this rectangular view is also not appropriate.

Case (b): let the viewing rectangle be [3,3] by [3,3].

Write the given equation in the graphing calculator,

y=1x22x

Start with the viewing rectangle [3,3] by [3,3].

Set,

Xmin=3Xmax=3Ymin=3Ymax=3

The result graph is as shown below,
