You have an irregularly shaped piece of an unknown metal. To identify it, you determine its density and then compare this value with known values that you look up in the chemistry library. The mass of the metal is 74.122 g. Because of the irregular shape, you measure the volume by submerging the metal in water in a graduated cylinder. When you do this, the water level in the cylinder rises from 28.2 mL to 36.7 mL.
(a) What is the density of the metal? (Use the correct number of significant figures in your answer.)
(b) The unknown is one of the seven metals listed below. Isis possible to identify the metal based on the density you have calculated? Explain.

- A solution is prepared by dissolving table salt, sodium chloride, in water at room temperature. a Assuming there is no significant change in the volume of water during the preparation of the solution, how would the density of the solution compare to that of pure water? b If you were to boil the solution for several minutes and then allow it to cool to room temperature, how would the density of the solution compare to the density in part a? c If you took the solution prepared in part a and added more water, how would this affect the density of the solution?arrow_forwardThe label on a bale of mulch indicates a volume of 1.45 ft3. - I think I did a calculation wrong but I am having trouble understanding significant figures. In this problem, I am calculation the density of water from my previous calculations mass= 7.359g and volume=7.8mL. So I then divided 7.359g by 7.8mL to find density and got (.9434615385) on my calculator which I then turned into (.94) because I believe there should be 2 significant figures.
