Interpretation:

The use of chemical name and symbols for matter needs to be explained.

Concept introduction:

Chemistry deals with the different processes which occur in the surrounding and are directly or indirectly related to each other.

Chemsitry deals with different elements, molecules and compounds. The chemical changes are associated with formation of new substances, whereas the physical changes are related to changes in physical state.

Chemical names and symbols are used to differentiate any substance from other.

Explanation of Solution

The basic unit of matter is considered as an atom and element can be defined as the matter which is composed of the same type of atoms.

Each element is represented as a specific chemical name and symbol. This is very important to differentiate elements from each other. A chemical symbol of an element is the one or two letter expression.

For example; copper is represented as Cu whereas the chemical symbol of cobalt is Co. Thus, to get uniformity throughout the elements, the chemical names and symbols are used.

Conclusion

Chemical names and symbols are used to differentiate any substance from other.
