Chapter U6.122, Problem 1TAI
Interpretation Introduction

Interpretation :

The effect of the change in conditions on the system at equilibrium must be explained.

Concept Introduction :

An equilibrium is a state of a physical or chemical change when the forward and backward reaction is taking place at same speed. According to La Chatelier’s principle when an equilibrium is disturbed by some external parameters then the equilibrium is shifted in a direction so that the external effect is minimized.

Answer to Problem 1TAI

The equilibrium is shifted to either reactant side or product side to keep the equilibrium constant same.

Explanation of Solution

When temperature is increased for an exothermic reaction then backward reaction is preferred. When pressure is increased then the equilibrium is shifted to less mole side. When more reactant is added or product is removed then the equilibrium is shifted to product side.

Thus a system at equilibrium is shifted when conditions are changed.
