This became a problem because people were often tired and frustrated at how inconvenient travelling was. For example, it takes around 11 to 12 hours to travel from London to New York by plane, but if you travel by ship / boat, it takes an average of 4 to 5 days. It could take two weeks to reach somewhere that took a plane two days to travel.
