Both Man’s Fate and Woman in the Dunes exemplify the ideas of existentialism. Existentialism as existence being absurd with no meaning. In order to deal with life’s absurdity, you must invent your own purpose and individual system of value. In Man’s Fate, existentialism is expressed by the decisions the characters make and the way the characters fulfill their decisions no matter the consequence. Vegetated sand ridges called dunes, built up by dry beach sand blown inland and trapped by plants and other obstructions, back most beaches. As sand accumulates, the dunes become higher and wider. Plants play a vital role in this process, acting as a windbreak and trapping the deposited sand particles. It is a poison needle tipped with "meta-cyanide" that is used by Bene Gesserit Proctors in their death-alternative test of human awareness. In Dune, the Reverend Mother uses the gom jabbar, originally tested on women, to test Paul Atreides just before his
