During the battle, the US Navy took the Japanese Navy by surprise and secured a decisive victory over the Japanese by sinking all 4 of their carriers, 3 battleships damaged, two heavy cruisers sunk, 3 additional heavy cruisers severely damaged, 4 destroyers sunk, and an estimated total loss of 4800 personnel, while the US only lost 1 carrier (Yorktown) and 1 destroyer (Hammann)
