Richard Joseph Daley, the grandson of Irish immigrants, was born in the Bridgeport area of Chicago on May 15, 1902. He was graduated from De La Salle Institute in 1918 and worked in the stockyards for several years before studying law. While studying, he worked as a clerk in the Cook County Controller's office. In 1936 Daley married Eleanor Guilfoyle, and the couple had three daughters and four sons. One son, Richard M. Daley, served in the Illinois Senate and as Cook County state's attorney before

According to author Adam Cohen, he was the most powerful local politician America has ever produced. Under his reign, the city’s black population was reaching record levels, as trainloads of blacks fled their hard lives in the rural south for the promise of a better life in northern cities. It was pretty clear that Chicago under Daley became America’s major northern rights battleground.
After the First World War, Chicago just like other American cities was experiencing a huge surge in the number of immigrants that played a significant role in its renowned neighborhoods. There is a history of corruption by officials in Chicago because they would use the political machine to gain political support to win in office. committee, the ward or precinct leaders and the party loyalists. The county committee members were those that held the top offices in the county political party. People like Thomas J Pendergast from Kansas City, James Michael Curley in Boston and Richard J Daley from Chicago. At this level they controlled the party’s nominations, the money and the votes.
