    The relationship between Gregory and Despereaux does influence the story. It keeps Despereaux alive when we all want so badly for him to live. It is a positive relationship but I don’t know if I would exactly call them friends, because if Despereaux had not wanted to tell a story, or had he not had a story to tell, Gregory would not have saved him.
