A Night at the Symphony “Real music is always, revolutionary, for it cements the ranks of the people; it arouses them and leads them onward,” claimed Dmitri Shostakovitch. Composers create music to influence but also to entertain people. On November 4, 2017, I attended the Midland-Odessa Symphony & Chorale concert at Wagner Noël Performing Arts Center, which was conducted by Gary Lewis. A Comparison of Haydn's Symphony No. 95 with Beethoven's Symphony No. 5 Introduction As noted by Robert Hughes, "Beethoven was not only the embodiment of all that was before him, but also of that which was yet to come" (Hughes 486). The truth of this may be seen by comparing Beethoven's 5th Symphony in C Minor to Haydn, the father of Symphony, and his 95th in C Minor. While Haydn's symphony is both playful and dramatic, Beethoven's symphony is grander both in terms of scale and vision. He expands

46-year-old Gustav Mahler was struck with inspiration unlike any he had ever had in his life. With this inspiration, he composed his Eighth Symphony in less than two months. Dedicated to “My dear wife, Alma Maria” and known as Mahler’s “search for redemption”, this symphony was the first of Mahler’s works to be an overwhelming success. Mahler’s Eighth Symphony connected two choral pieces, Veni, Creator Spiritus (early 9th century) and Goethe’s Faust, Part II (1830-1831). These two works were written

A symphony is an extended classical composition for an orchestra, found in Western Art Music. It often consists of four separate and unique, sections known as movements which are, in some way however, related to one another. The symphony as a genre began developing during the late 17th century and continued to do so up until the late 18th century. This important genre of Western Art Music is closely related to the development of the orchestra. It is therefore critical, in understanding the symphony

Symphony Number 45 in F# Minor (the "Farewell symphony") Between 1761 and 1790 Haydn was employed by the enormously wealthy Esterhazy family who had two palaces on the borders of Austria and Hungary. The court orchestra was similar to that of many baroque orchestras - two oboes, a bassoon, a string ensemble and a harpsichord. But it also included a pair of horns - instruments that became a regular part of the orchestra thereafter. --------------------------------------------------------------------

The Symphony No. 5 in C minor by Ludwig van Beethoven was written roughly between the years 1804 to 1808. This is most likely the best-known work in the classical music genre. Additionally it was written during the Classical period. It was initially performed in Vienna’s Theater an der Wien in 1808. The first movement: Allegro con brio, kicks it off with the famous four-note motif and once it begins it instantly creates the feeling of suspense and it immediately grabs my attention.
