Literacy Connections (LC) was founded in 1975 as Literacy Volunteers of America-Dutchess County, Inc. The agency changed its name to Literacy Connections in 2005. Literacy Connections is a private, not-for-profit, 501(C) (3) organization committed to helping adults and families become functionally literate. The organization works with the lowest literacy level adults in Dutchess, Columbia, and Greene Counties. Our core program is to help adults to learn to read and write, and function independently

The effects of the implementation of the Common Core Standard continues to affect students testing scores and, as a result, the demand for more and more volunteers from the Book Buddies & Classroom Book Buddies program. With more students not meeting the required reading proficiency level, particularly, low-income and minority students, the need for this intervention-type of program is in greater demand than ever. In the current program year, the program has experienced over 30% growth than anticipated

past 40 years. We also offer ESL classes to the growing immigrant community. We do this by recruiting and training volunteers to provide one-to-one and small group tutoring that is student-centered. We work with the lowest literacy level adults in Dutchess, Columbia, and Greene Counties. By following a student-centered and individualized learning approach, we give students a voice with regard to their learning goals. Teaching adults is not the same as teaching children. It takes a lot of courage for

interns. One student passed the TASC exam and three became citizens. These are just a few of the accomplishments our students are making – some with practically no reading ability when they started the program. These accomplished are possible thanks to Dutchess County Agency Partner Grant, other funders and contributors and the dedication of our outstanding volunteers and staff.
