Provide a basic definition of a crisis intervention. Explain the steps in an effective crisis intervention and define a Critical Incident Stress Debriefing (CISD) intervention. How do these interventions differ from other counseling techniques? Provide examples to support your rationale. A crisis intervention is considered a short-term technique to help reduce potential permanent damage to individuals that are affected by a crisis such as violence, death of a loved one, serious illness, or any other overwhelming event in their life (Wang & Gupta, 2023). In an effective crisis intervention, there are four assessment tasks and four intervention tasks. The fours assessment tasks according to Jackson- Cherry and Erford (2018) are to first address safety for all those involved, stabilize the situation if possible and calculate potential risks. The second assessment task is to follow a holistic bio-psycho-social-spiritual approach to help identify the root problem that the client is experiencing. The third assessment is to clarify the problem with the client as the actual problem may not be known or be present initially. The fourth assessment is exploring coping skills, resources, and support systems with the client. The first intervention task is to normalize and educate the client on their response to the crisis unless they are trying to arm another person. The second intervention task is to explore options such as in safety due to potential throughs of suicide. The third intervention task is to develop a plan and obtain a commitment for the client. The last intervention task is to prepare document, follow up with the client, and or provide referrals to other providers if needed. Critical Incident Stress Debriefing (CISD) intervention are still used to this day to provide a psychological debriefing after emergency calls/incidents to decrease the level of stress after these incidents have occurred (Jackson-Cherry & Erford, 2018). Crisis intervention techniques different from typical counseling techniques as these techniques as it is an attempt to assist those who are having temporary behavioral and cognitive symptoms in a crisis event while other counseling techniques whether brief or long term will deal with attempt to decrease symptoms of ongoing mental health problems (Jackson-Cherry & Erford, 2018).
