Ashley Sanford PUBH 400 3 February 2023 Health Education Defined Health education is best defined as any combination of planned learning experiences using evidence-based practices that provide opportunity to acquire knowledge, attitudes and skills needed to adopt and maintain healthy behaviors. Another definition to health education is any planned combination of learning experiences designed to predispose, enable, and reinforce voluntary behavior conductive to health in individuals, groups, or communities (McKenzie, 2017). Health promotion is defined as any planned combination of educational, political, environmental, regulatory, or organizational mechanisms that support actions and conditions of living conductive to the health of individuals, groups, and communities. Health educators are also a pivotal role in this because they are the most suitable applicants to plan health promotion programs (McKenzie, 2017). The difference between health education and health promotion is the differences in approach when it comes to influencing healthier behavior. Health promotion uses approaches that urges people to change their health behavior. Health education uses a different approach of encouraging changes in health behavior. To compare my definition to the textbook definition of health education and health promotion I think it was similar, but the textbook definition went into more depth about the topic. One component that overlapped with my definition and the textbook definition was that I explained health education as promoting healthier lifestyles and I feel like this corresponds with the textbook definition. I was a little surprised about the difference in my definition and the formal definition because the formal definition explains how health promotion and health
education use a combination of techniques. I think I was on the right track to explaining what health promotion and health education is, but I missed key terms while explaining these concepts. I could have better explained the approaches in health promotion and health education. I definitely have a better knowledge now after reading chapter one because I now understand the difference in approaches and how they influence people.
