A. The Great Depression had many root causes. The 1929 stock market crash was one of the leading
causes of the Great Depression. People’s faith in the financial system was very damaged because
of the stock market disaster. Many consumers attempted to withdraw all their funds from the
system afterward, but the banks couldn’t support that. Many businesses and banks were shuttered
because of the stock market crash, and many individuals lost their jobs (Norton, 2015).
The decline in sales was another major factor contributing to the Great Depression. Most people
were not earning much money after the stock market crisis. Since it was expensive, low-income
people only purchased a little produce and manufactured products. The result was a sharp decline
in sales. Many farmers were impacted by the fact that production wasn't being purchased. The
farmers devised a plan to attempt and increase agricultural production to aid with falling land
prices, but this plan failed because prices fell even further. Farmers found themselves unable to
afford their debts and taxes (Norton, 2015).
B. The Agriculture Adjustment Act was one of the attempts by the New Deal to solve the issue
caused by the Great Depression. This law aimed to stop cuts to farm products that were in
excess.
The Emergency Banking Relief is another attempt by the New Deal to address the problems of
the Great Depression. After the stock market collapsed, this legislation was passed to allow the
federal government to reopen the banks. This action aided in the banking systems rehabilitation
in the United States.
The Civilian Conservation Corps, or CCC, was another initiative of the New Deal to solve the
issues of the Great Depression. The provision of federal jobs aided unemployment. Numerous
people lost their employment because of the stock crash.
The Works Progress Administration Act, or WPA, provided people with few jobs to pay off debt
and return to the workforce, which helped them get back on their feet.
Lastly, it was decided to exempt the Social Security Act from taxation. This Act provided money
to the elderly who couldn’t find employment or could no longer be employed.
There were numerous initiatives that were implemented to help the New Deal solved issues that
were caused by the Great Depression.
C1. The Nuclear Arms Race was one specific circumstance that contributed to increased hostility
between the United States and the Soviet Union. Every country desired a nuclear arsenal that was
superior to that of its rivals. As a result, tensions during the Cold War increased. President
Truman proposed the Baruch Plan in 1946 to bring peace, but the proposal was rejected. Atomic
and hydrogen bombs were both developed by the Soviet Union and the United States. Tensions
from the competition continued getting worse. As a result, the weapons race grew increasingly
fierce (Norton, 2015).
C2. The United States and the Soviet Union’s divergent philosophies contributed to rising Cold
War tensions. There were more minor differences between the two nations. In contrast to the
Soviet Union, the United States maintained its stance on containment policies. This war was built
on propaganda, as the Soviet Union believed communism needed to be exported to other regions.
It went against United States values to spread communism to other areas. The Soviet Union
likewise wished to eradicate capitalism, which posed a threat to the way of life of Americans.
With differing ideologies and all these differences, tensions continued rising between the United
States and the Soviet Union (Norton, 2015).
C3. The Cold War significantly impacted American culture, stirring up fears that people would
live in a communist society and inspiring Senator Joseph McCarthy to launch the McCarthyism
crusade. The McCarthyism campaign spanned the years 1950-1954. The campaign was
developed to discredit anyone in the United States Government who was alleged to be a
communist or a communist supporter. This happened because people were often banned if they
were considered communists. This led to a great deal of mistrust (Norton,2015).
The Red Scare, as it was known in America, was caused by the Cold War. The Red Scare was the
concern over concealed communists in positions of authority. Propaganda developed and
transmitted by the US government helped to foster this apprehension. The domestic politics of
the day were impacted, which resulted in the founding of the Department of Defense, which was
intended to supervise numerous government army branches (Norton, 2015).
D. Feminism was a significant historical development that brought about numerous changes.
Since men were called to serve in World War 1, women started working. Typically, women didn’t
work; their roles were to stay home and do household chores, be at home with children, and be

unemployed. During that time, women’s rights were limited. When they got married, they lost
their rights to own land. They also had no rights to vote and work. Although it was never
explicitly declared that women couldn’t work, they were regarded as non-essential. Conflict
arose because women didn’t have the same equality that men did. Women soon developed a
feminist movement known as the National Organization for Women because of their outrage.
This movement fought for various issues, including equal opportunity, equal pay, equal rights,
and workforce rights. The National Women’s Party succeeded in amending the constitution to
include similar rights provisions. This campaign increased the rights of women. It also put an end
to the extreme inequality that existed between men and women; the feminist movement
continues to play a crucial role in American History (Norton, 2015).
Changes brought about by the feminist movements in later years include women's rights to
divorce and financial independence, increased awareness of domestic violence, and rights against
pregnancy and abortion. Abortions represent one of the primary changes brought about by this
movement in later years. Abortions were at the center of the rights of pregnancy for women's
discussion. The right to keep the pregnancy and the right to have an abortion was available to
them. We call this Roe v. Wade. To exercise her right to an abortion, Jane Roe appeared in court.
Regarding pregnant women and their decision to have an abortion, the supreme court decided in
1973 that women should have the right to privacy. By doing this, women were protected (Norton,
2015).
