Becoming a mother is one of the most difficult, yet most satisfying tasks I have ever accomplished. I have shed many tears of joy and frustration along the way. I have learned so much about myself as an individual, as well as my beliefs. Growing up, my mom was a big impact on my life. Two days of the week she was a dental assistant. The other days she was just my mom. When she came home on the days after work she would smell minty and fresh from working in her dental office. I feel blessed to have been able to have my mother as a constant influence in my life. She showed me that I could be as mother as well as have a good job; I did not need to pick one or the other. My mother taught me how to stand up for myself and how not to be a pushover. Watching my mother live from pay check to pay check when I was young was difficult. It was always hard for my mom to keep up with other parents but, she still somehow managed to get me everything I wanted, and more. Even though I was too young to understand, I could feel the stress, and the struggles my mom faced every day. She was only 20 years old when I was born and, because of that she had no choice but to grow up fast. At such a young age, I saw the effects of being a single parent, and the ways it changed my mom. She not only had to be a young mother but, she had to find a way to replace the void of a father, or a father figure in my life. My mom was strong, independent and courageous. However, whether it was good or bad, positive or negative, right or wrong, these experiences have shaped my moral and ethical development and made me who I am today. My mother taught me to respect my elders and peers at all times. She also told me not to pre-judge other people. Her saying was, “never judge a book by its cover” (Mama). I never truly understood it until I grew up and began to experience life. She said always be kind, and “never bite the hand that feeds you” (Mama). She never took the time to explain what these saying meant, so I had to learn them the hard way.

There are many people that have the strongest impact in your lives. They are your role model and you want to be like them. These can be your family members, friends, or people that you just see on T.V. Whoever they might be they impacted your life because of want you learned from them. One person that had the strongest impact that made me who I am today is my mom. My mom had impacted my life and made me who I am today because she taught how to treat other how I want to be treated, don't judge other people because of their looks, and if you don't try you won't succeed. These are only the few lesson that I learned from my mom as a kid.

From the moment she was born I knew she was different, arriving much earlier than expected, and frightening me to death with her little surprise. Then mere seconds later, after the doctor removed the umbilical cord from around her little pink neck, I heard her soft, sweet cry. In that instant, I knew she would be mama’s little fighter. Now here we are, 10 years later, and she still manages to amaze me every day. My daughter, Alexis, has tremendously changed my life and made me a better person by teaching me patience, showing me strength, and motivating me to improve myself.

First, motherhood has provided me with perspective. I have learned to work together as a team with my husband as we raise our three children. I have learned patience and selflessness as I have put the needs of my children before my own. I know how to budget my time, multi-task, and organize my schedule efficiently. Children have a tendency to bring out the very best in people. I can say I have been fortunate to have four little blessings of my own. I consider each of them as a blessing and each day I am reminded of how much they mean to me. My children have brought out the best in me--parts that I never knew existed. As children grow, so do parents. I have evolved into a better person with the courage to overcome all obstacles because of the love that I have for my children.

Learning something new can be scary. One of the hardest things I had to deal with, was losing my biggest motivator. It didn’t take me a lot to be motivated, but having my aunt and seeing how successful she was made me want to do better. Coping with my aunt’s death caused me to lose hope for a while. I figured if it happened to someone as smart and head strong like my aunt, it could easily happen to me. So, I had to learn how to motivate myself to keep going after I lost her. Success is a big part of my life. So, learning to keep going was tough. Losing my aunt helped me realize life is short and to keep going no matter what.
