Cody Stricker Mrs. Fritz English III 9 October 2017 The Tragic Hero In the Crucible there are many characters that represent the role of a tragic hero. I believe John Proctor shows this trait the best. Throughout the story, John Proctor realizes his mistakes and grows as a person. I believe John Proctor’s best quality is his honesty even though at the beginning he is struggling with honesty. By the end of the play Proctor has nothing left to hide, which we can see in this quote, “trembling, his life collapsing about him: I have known her, sir. I have known her” (Miller 110). This quote shows Proctor is willing to throw out his dignity in order to save the town from this conspiracy. He admits to having an affair with Abigail despite the consequences. I believe John Proctor’s biggest flaw is the sin of Adultery. John had an affair with Abigail which lead to Abigail’s jealousy of Elizabeth Proctor. We know John did this because of this quote, “Abby, I may think of you softly from time to time. But I will cut off my hand before I’ll ever reach for you again” (Miller 23). Abigail attempts to kill Elizabeth in order to take her place. We know this because we get clues of it multiple times, but this quote shows it well, “Elizabeth: She wants me dead. I knew all week it would come to this!” (Miller 60). Elizabeth and Proctor, though Proctor is trying to hide it, realize what Abigail is trying to do. Later Procter gets involved with the court and attempts to save his friends and neighbors, but ends up getting blamed himself. “Mary Warren, hysterically, indicating Proctor: He come at me by night and every day to sign, to sign, to -” (Miller 118).
