Roots, the movie or series, is closely based on Alex Haley’s novel about his ancestors from Africa who were forced into slavery. The series begins with the life of Kunta Kinte, a young boy from Gambia, West Africa who has been captured and kidnapped by slave raiders. He reluctantly goes from being surrounded by loving family and friends to being forced into slavery half way across the world from everything he knows. Episode one of the historical series mainly depicts Kunta’s home life in Gambia. We observe as Kunta Kinte develops into a fearless, responsible teenager. He then attends manhood training in his village of Mandika and is transformed into an adult man in his society. This is where Kunta Kinte first witnesses the presence of white …show more content…
Although I’ve only watched two episodes, I feel like I’m connected to Kunta Kinte. His story is so sad, inspiring, and exciting. It left me wondering what is going to happen next. It makes me question if Kunta will survive and escape. Also it makes me question if he’ll ever be united with Fanta and his family again. This movie is very deep and difficult to watch because it forces me reflect on how badly Africans and African Americans have been treated, but it also makes me proud that things are better. I believe that this movie is historically accurate because the portrayal of the conditions on the ship was as badly as they were during slavery. I feel this movie accurately depicts life as an African slave and how hard it is to let go of everything someone has learned and conform to a new identity. I believe the movie explains all points of perception from the slaves’ point of view to the slave owners’ to the capturers’ and even the captain of the ship’s experience. Although the movie is dramatized, it is very believable. I would rate this movie an 8.5 so far because I haven’t had the chance to see the whole thing. I am intrigued to see what more there is in store for Kunta Kinte and his
This paper explores the Movie “It’s Complicated” a 2009 romantic comedy film, based of the novel written by Nancy Meyers. In this movie Jane and Jake Adler are a divorced couple of ten years. They start a secret love affair in New York, at their son’s graduation. While Jake is trying to have a family with his much younger wife, Agnes. I will be looking at if this is a possible mid-life crisis, genetics, or if it a developmental issue of Jake for wanting to be with his first wife, Jane.
The movie Step Brothers, directed by Adam McKay in 2008 displays the true meaning of comedy which will have the audience’s attention from the very first scene due to the one thing they have in common, which is being forty-year-old stepbrothers who still live at home with mom and dad. However, the American Culture finds the forty-year-old step brother extremely funny due to the way they act, and live their life. When it comes to comedy movies, Step Brothers is ranked highly on the leaderboards of the funniest movies of all time.
The Patriot. A person who is willing to fight for their country against enemies. The Patriot begins in the year 1776 in the colony of South Carolina. Mel Gibson plays a planation farmer who fought in the French-Indian war named Benjamin Martin. A War was about to begin and Benjamin wanted no share partaking in the soon-to-be American Revolutionary War. He was more concerned about his two eldest sons who wanted to fight under General George Washington. The beginning of the movie starts out with Benjamin Martin peacefully living with his kids whom no longer have a living mother. Benjamin’s oldest son, Gabriel, joins the war without permission from his father. As the rest of the family are at home one afternoon, Colonel William Travington burns the Martin Plantation to the ground and his second oldest son was killed immediately for interrupting Travington’s plan. Benjamin finds a way to seek revenge because of the rage he experiences after his family is hurt. He begins to realize that he needs to fight for his children and he will not do it alone. Both Benjamin and his oldest son, Gabriel, decide to join the militia as a way of showing what they are capable of. Throughout the film, Benjamin Martin becomes a soldier whom others respect and admire. He shows the militia what it means to truly care for not only his men, but also for his family. As the film progresses, a turn of events take place that show Benjamin’s continued want of revenge against General Charles Cornwallis. The Continentals and the militia soon commence the battle at Cowpens. This is when Benjamin Martin meets his enemy, Travington, who murdered his two eldest sons. After a drawn-out battle, Benjamin stabs Travington in the neck and kills him for the sake of his children. It is then that General Cornwallis retreats his forces and the rest celebrate. Even though some portions of The Patriot aren’t as accurate as we perceive, it is a film full of war and despair, but also a film that contributes to the importance of dignity and the love for one’s family.
This structure is commonly seen in any film or television production, as using the structure makes sure that the narrative is continuing to move forward, and is developing. The film plot line I will be studying and making an analysis on is The Lost Boys.
The pivotal scene that will be thoroughly represented and analyzed is from the movie 8 Mile, directed by Curtis Hanson, and released in 2002. 8 Mile is a semiautobiographical film based on the life story of the iconic rapper Marshal Mathers, or better known by his stage name Eminem, and how he began his journey into the hip-hop industry. In this film, Eminem plays himself, as the main character named Jimmy Smith Jr.; however, throughout the course of the movie, he is referred to as Rabbit more than anything else. Rabbit lives in a very rough part of Detroit known as 8 Mile, in a mobile home with his single alcoholic of a mother. Their financial situation is dire and Rabbit decides he needs to find a different occupation. Rabbit works at a factory to barely make ends meet; however, the amount he makes is abysmal compared to what he needs. Rabbit has a passion for music, specifically rap. However, this is a challenge because at the time the rap genre was predominantly occupied by African-Americans. Despite this, Rabbit continues on in his pursuit of making a name for himself in the rap industry. He enters rap battle competitions in hopes of getting noticed. He runs into a group of local amateur rappers known as “Leadaz of tha Free World”. The leader of this group is named Papa Doc and he is portrayed to be Rabbits greatest adversary. Rabbit and Papa Doc both make it to the final round of the rap battle competition and that’s when the pivotal scene
In truth, there is a lot of fabrication of the story; however, the producer applies some elements of the true story that occurred in Rosewood. Based on the movie, the main aim was to provide a movie that is emotionally moving which affects racial affiliation in terms black or white (Gannon, 61). Some of the scenes focus on the emotional reaction, and the depiction of the movie focus on the concept of outside looking in.
O Brother Where Art Thou? The movie is set in Mississippi in the late 1930's, with The Great Depression looming in the background. A condensed plot, are that the three main characters Ulysses McGill, Pete Hogwallop and Delmar O'Donnell are convicts that break away from a chain gang. They break away because they're on a quest to find the treasure that Everett hid. As the three men go along in their literal chains, they run into a ton of problems and interesting characters like The KKK, a campaigning governor, a robber, and a blind prophet. From the research I have done, the popular opinion is that this film is loosely based on the book, "The Odyssey". The overall tone and mood is somewhat goofy, but it has some heavy topics behind it like The
The film Warrior was released September 9, 2011 by director, writer and producer Gavin O’Connor. O’Connor takes us through a story of two former MMA fighting brothers dealing with a harsh family past (“Warrior”). Pulp Fiction is a black comedy crime film written and directed Quentin Tarantino (1994). The film’s “narrative follows the unpredictable actions and reflections of two hit men who philosophically meditate out loud about the Bible, loyalty, and McDonald’s hamburgers” (Corrigan, White, 368). The movie goes against the three-act structure of classic films as the story is told out of chronological order making the film so memorable to its viewers. Tarantino’s film begins in a coffee shop and also ends in the same shop. In the beginning of the film, it appears to be a soft, moist, shapeless matter of mass but as the movie progresses the audience can take away much more from the mundane acts they view on screen. The film’s odd narrative
The Abolitionists shows a long journey of ending the slavery. How they fought for the freedom for slaves and how they scarify what they had in the way of the human being equality. This documentary helps people to think about the long process that some people toke and they put their life in danger everyday by speaking against slavery. They main point of this story is in these people: Frederick Douglass, William Lloyd Garrison, Angelina Grimke, Harriet Beecher Stowe, and John Brown. Angelina Grimke was from a famous family in South Carolina. Each member of her family had their own slave but Angelina broke slave owning from her family. She was thinking that slavery is sin and God will punish the person who has slave. In 1829 she moved to North and she
Tom Tykwer’s Run Lola Run (1998) is truly a brilliant film. It is very seldom that a film manages to combine the high pace of an action thriller and a deep philosophical subtext without botching it, but Run Lola Run does an excellent job at striking a balance between both. Tackling the very abstract and philosophical concepts of chance and cause-effect, Run Lola Run is truly a modern foreign classic. Tykwer manages to postulate one simple theory through the film, that the simplest of choices can completely change everything. The film is supported by stellar performances from Franka Potente and Moritz Bleibtreu as the protagonist Lola and her boyfriend, Manni. The film’s use of cinematography to add to the narrative, clever use of the aspects of mise-en-scene and explosively-paced soundtrack add a whole new dimension to this film. One of the few German films to be both a critical and commercial success, Run Lola Run is a smart and stimulating film, which demands active watching in order to understand fully. I will now analyze the film comprehensively using three main parameters; the mise-en-scene, the cinematography and the sound.
In Mythology, there are various standards of analyzation such as the Freudian, Jungian, and Rankian methods of analysis. In this essay, I will analyze the 1994 American film Forrest Gump by using three methods of analysis. In overview, the movie Forrest Gump tells a tale of a young Georgia country boy by the name of Forrest Gump. Forrest can be characterized as a special kid who had to wear leg braces because of his inability to walk straight. In addition, in the movie Forrest is seen having a low IQ when compared to other kids his age. Forrest soon finds himself being rejected by the other kids in the bus when he suddenly comes face to face with what would later be the love of his life, Jenny Currant. Growing up together, Jenny and
Set in 1954, The Founder is a 2016 American biographical drama film that tells the true story of Ray Kroc’s involvement in the creation of the McDonald’s fast food chain.
The movie in which I chose to do my movie analysis on was not one from the list provided. However, it is one of my all-time favorite movies The Band of Brothers a miniseries by HBO. I chose to do this one over the other because not only is it very entertaining and keeps you want to watch more, just to see what happens to everyone invaded but also because of the history be hide the story. The fact that they used real life experiences to help make the film just made it that much better. I watch The Band of Brothers at least a few times a year so I was happy to do this assignment.
The movie The Patriot takes place in South Carolina in 1776. The colonies were tired of paying taxes and all of this from England. They decided to go to war and fight for independence. This movie is mainly about how a farmer named Benjamin Franklin lived in South Carolina and the British brutally murdered his second oldest son right in front of his family then later the same person Col. Travingston kills Benjamin’s oldest son Gabriel. Due to this he joins the militia in order for justice of his sons. At first he wants nothing to do with it but once his sons were murdered he wanted revenge. The Patriot was about the American Revolution, the Patriot militia fighting against loyalists in the south. The film was mainly about Benjamin Martin’s family and fighting for liberty against England. They did show us about the war and them fighting in it but it was mainly about Martins’ life. They did show us them fighting in the war and how they would line up and fight in the war but they didn’t show us enough.
