As my fifteen-year-old roommate falls to pieces, panic rises in my chest like a leaping flame. She lets out muffled screams and chilling sobs as she buries her face against the pillow. I kneel beside her and whisper reassurances. “You’ll be okay.” “No one will hurt you.” I pray she hears me but I know she doesn’t. Veterans put their life on the line to help defend our country because it’s something they feel they need to do. They are very inspiring people. Most people don’t have the courage to go to war. The men and women who are so courageous are once in a lifetime people who have amazing stories to tell. Our freedom would not exist if it weren’t for veterans.

One often misinterprets the true meaning of war, believing it is only a dispute that is ended through fighting. In fact, war is more than just fighting. It is a battle where many brave souls lose their lives for protecting the country they love. Many of the rights we have today would not have been possible without the sacrifice of many brave American soldiers. Instead of living in a tranquil and prosperous nation, we could be living in a nation that resembles countries such as Africa, living under poor conditions and extreme poverty. It is imperative to take into consideration that the veterans we have today have made an impact on our nation and we owe much of our respect to them. Not many people have the courage to take on the heavy and overwhelming duty of going to war, knowing that death is imminent. I appreciate America’s Veterans because they have served for us back then and have protected us. Especially they gave up their lives when they were young, For instance, some of the Veterans were poor and had nothing and they went to the military to be a better person.

The wars of Iraq and Afghanistan have not only renewed the appreciation for our nation’s military, but it has also raised awareness about the sacrifices and the culture that is produced through the ranks in uniform and also amongst veterans. Some common conditions that they may face include polytrauma, traumatic brain injury and post-traumatic stress disorder. Our military veterans must learn how to reintegrate into society as they transition back to civilian life, which can prove difficult for many reasons. They may experience difficulty readjusting to life at home, school, work or within the community.

We see our country’s veterans everywhere we go. We see them driving around town. We see them at our local Wal-Mart and grocery stores. Unfortunately we also see them on our local street corners and park benches. In many cases this is because of mental illnesses or alcohol/drug abuse. So what are we doing to help these ones? Although our veterans face many issues adapting back to civilian life after service, the government, through the Department of Veteran Affairs, is trying to help these issues through housing for the homeless, health care plans, schooling, as well as assisting these ones find substantial jobs.

Veterans fought for us. They fought for everything for us they go and fight other countries for our freedom some of them lost their lives for our lives to be superior. They have done more than we expected from them. We get to do more things by doing nothing. They get to do nothing and they are the ones that fought and deserve to do the things we get to do.

Veterans need healthcare after serving in wars to treat their problems and injuries. Jobs are also important to everyone. Veterans are jobless after fighting in wars. Veterans are part of the foundation of our nation’s freedom. Our veterans risked everything knowing the reward would be living in a free nation. Without our veterans and all of the hard work they have done our nation would have gotten pushed around, and probably still would. Our veterans are those that stood up for our country in its time of need. These brave men and women are the the reason we are able to make our own choices and decisions. Our veterans are the reason to be thankful for getting to choose where you live, work, go to school and church, and how everyday life is spent. They created the stepping stones for the people of today and tomorrow to get to make their own decisions.

They fought for basic freedoms that most Americans today take for granted. Freedom of the press, freedom of religion, and the Bill of Rights were written in the blood of those who raised their hand when the greater good of our country was at stake. You may say that today, the fight is different; it is about oil and politics. Whatever the leaders of our country decide, after being duly elected freely by you and your fellow Americans, has to be carried out by the volunteers who are on the front lines of the American ideal. The Veterans gave up their lives of comfort, postponed their dreams for their family, and placed themselves in harms way because it was what you and your proxies asked of them. If you disagree with the reasons why the Veterans are in one part of the world or what they are doing there, you should let your opinions be known, by voting or by speaking or by writing. Make sure you place your dissatisfaction where it belongs, not on the backs of those who serve your interests but on those who sent them
