Concept explainers
(a)
Interpretation:
The polarity of meta-dichlorobenzene has to be given.
Concept Introduction:
Polarity results from the uneven partial charge distribution between various atoms in a compound. Atoms, such as nitrogen, oxygen, and halogens that are more electronegative have a tendency to have partial negative charges. Atoms, such as carbon and hydrogen, have a tendency to be more neutral or have partial positive charges.
Polar nature of the molecules can be measured by the dipole moment. If a molecule has zero dipole moment then it is a non polar molecule. If a molecule has a net dipole moment then it is a polar molecule.
(b)
Interpretation:
The polarity of para-dichlorobenzene has to be given

- Formamide, HC(O)NH2, is prepared at high pressures from carbon monoxide and ammonia, and serves as an industrial solvent (the parentheses around the O indicate that it is bonded only to the carbon atom and that the carbon atom is also bonded to the H and the N atoms). Two resonance forms (one with formal charges) can be written for formamide. Write both resonance structures, and predict the bond angles about the carbon and nitrogen atoms for each resonance form. Are they the same? Describe how the experimental determination of the HNH bond angle could be used to indicate which resonance form is more important.arrow_forwardUse the VSEPR model to predict the bond angles around each central atom in the following Lewis structures (benzene rings are frequently pictured as hexagons, without the letter for the carbon atom at each vertex). Note that the drawings do not necessarily depict the bond angles correctly.arrow_forwardHow would you describe the molecular geometry of C2H2F2, and what are its bond angles?arrow_forward
- Predict the hybridization, geometry, and bond angles for the carbon atoms in acetylene, C2H2.arrow_forwardDraw a line-bond structure for propane, CH3CH2CH3. Predict the value of each bond angle, and indicate the overall shape of the molecule.arrow_forwardDraw the 2D and the 3D Lewis structure for each molecule. You do not need to show resonance structures here. Determine the electron pair geometry (EPG), the molecular geometry (MG), the bond angle (BA) around the central atom, and the hybridization of the central or bold atom. Circle the formula of any polar molecule. For molecules with more than one central atom (e.g. CHCH20H) give the structure around the bold atom.arrow_forward
- ) Bean hexene is an odor compound used in cosmetics and cleaners. It is also known as leguminal. Its formula is: CH3CH2CHCHCH2CH2OCHCH2CH3 | OCH3 Please draw a Lewis structure for this compound with CORRECT GEOMETRY (use dashes and wedges!) Label all pi bonds in the molecule (if there are any) Indicate the bond angles for the red highlighted section of the molecule. (hint: you may want to keep the main carbon chain in-plane with the page for clarity) For this question, you don’t need to draw out the orbitals.arrow_forwardDraw the correct shape of TcCl2 Are the bonds here polar? If so, draw crossed arrows along them to show the direction of polarity. If not, explain why not. Is the whole molecule polar? If so, draw a crossed arrow through the 3-dimensional structure above to show the direction of polarity. If not, explain why not.arrow_forward3) Determine whether CH3CI is polar. To do this, you must: draw the 3D structure of the molecule, use arrows to indicate polar bonds, and either use an arrow to indicate the net dipole moment or state that the molecule is non-polar.arrow_forward
- 2. In measurements of the structure of molecules, some interesting trends are observed. The bond angle (H-C-H) in CH4 is 109°, as we would expect for a molecule in the tetrahedral VSEPR class. However, other molecules in the same VSEPR class, such as ammonia (NH3, H-N-H= 107°) and water (H2O, H-O-H = 105°), have smaller bond angles than expected. Explain the basis for the bond angle trend: CH4 > NH3 > H2O. %3Darrow_forwardDraw a line-bond structure for propene, CH3CH=CH2. Indicate the hybridization of the orbitals on each carbon, and predict the value of each bond angle.arrow_forwardYeni Metin Belgesi - Not Defteri Dosya Düzen Biçim Görünüm Yardım For acetaldehyde (CH3CHO) write the Lewis structure.
