Chapter 21, Problem 68P
Figure 21.37 shows a rectangular box with sides 2a and length L surrounding a line carrying uniform line charge density A. The line passes directly through the center of the box faces. Integrate the field of the line charge over strips of width dx as shown to find the electric flux through one face of the box. Multiply by 4 to get the total flux, and show that your result is consistent with Gauss’s law.

In the figure a sphere, of radius a = 14.2 cm and charge q = 1.00×10-5 C uniformly distributed throughout its volume, is concentric with a spherical conducting shell of inner radius b = 48.3 cm and outer radius c = 50.3 cm . This shell has a net charge of -q.
a) Find expressions for the electric field, as a function of the radius r, within the sphere and the shell (r < a). Evaluate for r = 7.1 cm.
b) Find expressions for the electric field, as a function of the radius r, between the sphere and the shell (a < r < b). Evaluate for r=31.2 cm.
c) Find expressions for the electric field, as a function of the radius r, inside the shell (b < r < c). Evaluate for r = 49.3 cm.
d) Find expressions for the electric field, as a function of the radius r, outside the shell (r > c). Evaluate for r = 51.3 cm.
e) What is the charge on the outer surface of the shell?
Gauss's Law problem:
An infinite, uniform, line of charge is on the x-axis. The linear charge density is (lambda), with units of C/m. Find an expression for the electric field at a particular y-value on the y-axis at x=0, using Gauss's Law. Do this problem as if (lambda) is positive -- the answer is valid regardless of the sign.
Pick a shape for your Gaussian surface. Since you don't know the value (or expression) for E, you must pick a surface where the electric flux is either EA or zero. (E must be uniform over the surface for EA.)
a) A very long (almost infinitely long) cylindrical wire of radius R carries a uniform charge density Po. Find
the line charge density. Find the electric field inside and outside the wire. b) If a long cylindrical cavity of
radius b is created at a distance a in the wire maintaining same charge density as part (a) (see Fig. 2). Find
the line charge density. Find the electric field inside the cylindrical cavity.

What is electric field at any point inside the sphere? Solution To find the electric field inside the non-uniformly charged sphere, we may apply integration method or the Gauss's Law method. Here, let us use the Gauss's law which is expressed as fE - dÃ= Q / epsilono %| We will choose a symmetric Gaussian surface, which is the surface of a sphere, then evaluate the dot product to obtain A = (Equation 1) The issue however is how much charge does the Gaussian surface encloses? Since, our sphere is an insulating material, charges will get distributed non-uniformly within the volume of the object.
