Concept explainers
Reaction Rates In a chemical reaction, the reaction rate R is a function of the concentraton of
the product of the reaction. For a certain second-order reaction between two substances, we
have the formula
Here x is measured in moles per cubic meter and R is measured in moles per cubic meter per
second.
a. Make a graph of R versus x. Include concentrations up to 100 moles per cubic meter.
b. Use functional notation to express the reaction rate when the concentration is 15
moles per cubic meter, and then calculate hat value.
c. The reaction is said to be in equilibrium when the reaction rate is 0. At what two
concentratoins is the reaction in equilibrium?

- The resistance of a copper wire carrying an electrical current is directly proportional to its length and inversely proportional to its cross-sectional area. A copper wire with a diameter of 0.0126inch has a resistance of 64.9ohms per thousand feet. What length of 0.0201-inch-diameter copper wire will produce a resistance of 33.5ohms?arrow_forwardThe rate of change of an autocatalytic chemical reaction is kQxkx2 where Q is the amount of the original substance, x is the amount of substance formed, and k is a constant of proportionality. - Immigration The following graph shows immigrationin thousand to the United States has varied over the past century. Source: Homeland Security. a. Find the average annual rate of change in immigration for the first half of the century from 1905 to 1955. b. Find the average annual rate of change in immigration for the second half of the century from 1955 to 2005. c. Find the average annual rate of change in immigration for the entire century from 1905 to 2005. d. Average your answers to part a and b, and compare the result with your answer from part c. Will these always be equal for any two time periods? e. If the annual average rate of change for entire century continues, predict the number of immigrants in 2009. Compare answer to the actual number of 1,130,818 immigrants.arrow_forwardDialysis A model that estimates the concentration of urea in the body for a particular dialysis patient, following a dialysis session is given by C(t,g)=0.6(0.96)(210t/1500)1+gt126t900[1(0.96)(210t/1500)1]. Where t represents the number of minutes of the dialysis session and g represents the rate at which the body generates urea in mg per minute. Source: Clinical Dialysis. a. Find C(180,8). b. Using the total differential, estimate the urea concentration if the dialysis session of part was cut short by 10 minutes and the urea generation rate was 9 mg per minute. Compare this with the actual concentration. Hint: First, replace the variable g with the number 8, this reducing the function to one variable. Then use your graphing calculator to calculate the partial derivatives Ct(180,8). A similar procedure can be done for Cg(180,8).) c. d.arrow_forward
