- The red color of soil is often due to the presence of iron. Metal ions are extracted from soil by stirring the soil in acid and then filtering the solution. One method for the analysis of Fe2+ is to form the highly colored Fe2+–thioglycolic acid complex. The complex absorbs strongly at 535 nm. Calibration standards of 1.00, 2.00, 3.00, 4.00, and 5.00 ppm are prepared by transferring appropriate amounts of a 10.0 ppm working solution of Fe2+ into separate 50-mL volumetric flasks, each of which contains 5 mL of thioglycolic acid, 2 mL of 20% w/v ammonium citrate, and 5 mL of 0.22 M NH3. After diluting to volume and mixing, the absorbances of the standards are measured. a)What is the effect on the reported concentration of iron in the sample if there is a trace impurity of Fe2+in the ammonium citrate?arrow_forwardHow to tell if a cluster is coordinatively saturated or unsaturated? For a example the structure of triosmium-decacarbonyl-hydrido cluster [Os3(μ-H)(CO)9], is it coordinatively saturated or unsaturated?arrow_forwardTungsten hexacarbonyl (W(CO)6) is reacted with (EtC≡N) and the product is W(CO)3(N≡CEt)3.However, the product can be a mixture of fac and mer isomers. But a Chemist can determine fromanalysis of the infrared spectrum if the product is indeed a mixture of isomers or not. In thesynthesis experiment, the product shows 3 carbonyl stretching frequencies in the infraredspectrum, at 2021, 1898 and 1840 cm-1. Determine the irreducible representations of the stretchesexpected for each of the two species in their respective point group. Can you confirm what isomerwas isolated?arrow_forward
- Ammoniacal nitrogen can be determined by treatment of the sample with chloroplatinic acid; the product is slightly soluble ammonium chloroplatinate: H2PtCl6 + 2NH4+ = (NH4)2PtCl6 + 2H+ The percipitate decomposes upon ignition, yielding metallic platinum and gaseous products: (NH4)2PtCl6 = Pt(s) + 2Cl2(g) + 2NH3(g) + 2HCl(g) What is the percentage of ammonium in a sample of 0.2213g of sample gave rise to 0.5881g of platinum?arrow_forwardPd(II) and Au(II) can be determined simultaneously by the reaction with methiomeprazine (C 19 H 24 N 2 S 2 ). The maximum absorption for Pd occurs at 480 nm, while for the Au complex it is at 635 nm. A sample of 25 mL was treated with excess of the complexant and then diluted to 50.0 mL. Calculate the molar concentrations of Pd(II) and Au(II) in the sample. The data are found in the table below and the bucket used was 1.0 cm.arrow_forwardWhich of the following is true about fluorescence intensity of the molecule? I Fluorescence is observed in planar molecules and its intensity increase with an increase in the number of aromatic rings II When zinc is added to a hydroxyl quinoline solution the fluorescence intensity increased due to the formation of a complex which increases the rigidity of the molecule. III On increasing the intensity of the incident radiation the fluorescence intensity increases IV On increasing the concentration of the fluorigenic molecule, the fluorescence intensity increases. - (a) Determine the number and activities of the carbonyl stretching modes of both the cis and trans isomers of L2M(CO)4. (b) Calculate the IR and Raman active carbonyl vibrations for both isomers. (c) Fe(CO)4C12 has IR bands at 2167, 2126 and 1082 cm-1 in CHC13 solution. How would you interpret this spectrum?arrow_forwardThe CO stretching vibration frequencies measured in the IR spectra taken in hydrocarbon solutions of co-electron [Mn(CO)6], [Mn(CO)6]- and [Mn(CO)6]+ complexes are 1981, 1859 and 2101 cm-1, respectively. According to these values, the Explain C≡O bond lengths and Mn-C bond lengthsarrow_forwardThe molecules Cr(CO)6 and MnCl(CO)5 are both octahedral in their molecular geometry. Are these two molecules discernable by their CO stretches using IR spectroscopy. Using group theory approach and the CO bond vectors as the basis, show that these molecules are (or are not) discernable by IR spectroscopy.arrow_forward
- The thionitrosyl complex (nº-CsHs)Cr(CO)2(NS) has carbonyl bands at 2033 and 1962 cm-1, whereas the corresponding stretching vibrations for the NO complex, (n5-CsHs)Cr(CO)2(NO) are evident in the infrared spectrum at 2028 and 1955 cm1. On the basis of the differences in the infrared spectra, discuss which ligand (NO or NS) is the better TT acceptor in these complexes.arrow_forwardKp of this quation 2A+3B=4C+5Darrow_forwardWhich of the following compounds follow the effective atomic number rule, and which do not?(27Co, 46Pd, 48Cd, 80Hg) K2[HgI4] [CdI4]2-, Co2CO8 (no bridging ligand) [Pd(NH3)2Cl2]arrow_forward
