If I had a choice to add a 28th amendment to the constitution, I would purpose equal income rights to both female and male employees. Fortunately, living in a country that strives for equal rights and equal opportunities for all citizens, I believe that if a female can perform equivalent work, in the same industry as a male or vis versa, she should be able to be entitled with same earnings as a male performing the exact duties. For over 200 years Americans have adhered to the constitution with little changes needed. Why change something that has been working for so long, in some cases an amendment might need to be changed or undated but for this reason we have the right to ratify if need be. Unfortunately even today conflict exists for freedom
The past 27 amendments have been the thread for America’s guide toward living life as a successful American. These amendments have fostered growth and justice for the past two-hundred years; however times are evolving which is means for new procedures. While observing the 2016 elections, I believe there are grounds for creating the 28th Amendment. The 28th amendment shall state that those running for any political office shall not be allowed to continue candidacy if examples of hate or malicious intent are present during campaigning. This year’s forum has been a very frustrating and disgraceful example of what America is not. The name calling and spiteful comments have made something that was once politically prestigious event to something that is merely a publicity stunt. It is plausible that one may get out of line sometimes and may lose sight of what is important, however this entire race has gone too far. It is unacceptable that some candidates are allowed a platform as big as the Presidential race to blatantly express their hate toward immigrants, other candidates, and even the wives of candidates. America is letting what most considered a joke turn into a reality. Unqualified candidates are turning into party nominees and
It was crucial for the colonists to figure out a way to live and work together. This was their first time making decisions without being commanded by a king or Queen and it was important to formulate and then implement a plan of action. (Schmidt, 2017). The idea of a constitution was thus created for the betterment of those living in America and has served as a rallying cry, a defense mechanism, and a safeguard for all citizens within the United States. This irreplaceable document has survived throughout time not only on paper but also in the hearts of many Americans. The Constitution of the United States officially went into effect on “September 17,1787” (Schmidt,2017, pg.35). The greatness of this constitution is still seen today as it serves as a solid base, with room allowed for re-examination or change if needed. Every now and then an issue may arise and the laws set forth into the constitution are reexamined and an amendment may be set
“All men are equal” Thomas Jefferson wrote in the declaration of independance. The 24th amendment later fulfilled that all men are equal by prohibiting the federal and state governments from imposing poll taxes before a citizen can participate in a federal election. This meant that some states charged a tax to vote. This was thought to keep poor and black people from voting. This amendment made it illegal to charge a tax, or any other kind of charge to vote.It was proposed by the Congress on August 27, 1962. Then later it was ratified by the states on January 23, 1964.
Imagine living in a world where everyone was considered equal. Imagine living in a world where people were considerate of others. Imagine living in a world where everyone had the same rights and privileges. The Framers took a step at achieving this world with the passage of the 14th amendment. The intent of the 14th amendment was to prevent state governments from denying African Americans in the U.S. from their citizenship. At the time Africans were unable to attain citizenship because of their skin color. The Framer’s objective in formulating the 14th amendment was to grant citizenship to everyone born in the U.S., regardless of skin color. The 14th amendment expanded the protection of civil rights to all citizens in America.
Gender equality is something that has been a problem through the ages. Susan B. Anthony and many others fought for the right to vote which was granted in 1920. In 1963, President John F. Kennedy signed the Equal Pay Act into law stating that no employer can discriminate based on gender. The American Association of University Women published a graph on Women’s Median Annual Earnings as a Percentage of Men’s Median Annual Earnings for Full-time, Year-round Workers, 1974-2014 and it shows that in 1974, women were paid 59% of what men were paid. The graph shows the improvements over the years and that in 2014, women were paid 79% of what men were paid. The gap has not budged since 2014. The gender pay gap has improved over the years, but it will not close until new legislation passes.
Thank you for contacting me about the idea of the Congressional Reform Act, sometimes referred to as the 28th Amendment. I appreciate you taking the time to share your concerns with me.
Women have made significant strides in society, proving themselves to be as capable as men in the workforce. However, while women are making equal contributions, men and women are not earning equal wages. Even though the Equal Pay Act was established in 1963, women continue to earn lower wages than men over half a century later. This inequality not only affects women as individuals but has a detrimental effect on the national economy. The gender wage gap in the United States should end because it is unjust; correcting it would have social and economic benefits for the U.S.
According to Google, the definition of gender equality is “ the state in which access to rights or opportunities is unaffected by gender.” According to an article about gender equality from the LATimes.com “ They don’t translate into greater equality in the labor market.” ( LATimes.com)
A different quote from a different reading from class that closely relates and further demonstrates this problem is about unequal pay. The quote reads “Many sociologists point to sex segregation, or the concentration of men and women in different occupations, as an important cause of the gender gap in earnings” (Giddens, Duneier, Appelbaum, Carr, 269, 270). It is obviously not fair that women and men get paid differently because of sex segregation. It should not matter if someone is a male or female. If the person is doing what they are supposed to be doing, I believe the pay should be the same between the
The United States Constitution has been referred to as a 'living document' due to the fact that it has endured. The Amendment process allows official changes to the document. This allows the document to sustain its and as such continue to have meaning for the people. The framers realized that The United States in 1789 would not be the same place in 2009. Another reason the document has stood the test of time is written in Article 1 section 8 clause 18. Commonly called the 'elastic clause', it states that The Congress has the power to do what is 'proper and necessary' to carry out the 17 delegated powers. Although this clause has been disputed by many, just as many believe it helps to 'fill in the blanks' as needed. Remember The Constitution
Equality has been a topic of major discussion in the last decade. Equality, which definition consists of the state of being equal or the same, has not had a major impact on gender pay. Men are known to make more money than women simply based on gender. The Equal Pay Act of 1963 was supported by President John F. Kennedy to cease the gender pay gap and allow women equal rights in wages as men. Although, it has been fifty four years since The Equal Pay Act of 1963 went into effect, it seems as if the idea for equal pay for women is still not only a topic for debate, but also an issue for women that needs to be resolved.
1. The 26th amendment to the Constitution, enacted on July 1, 1971, established the legal voting age for Americans as 18, www.truethevote.org/resources/faq/.../legal-age-for-voting. You can vote in all national and local elections once you are registered to vote.
Women employees make less than men in the same job position. “It is an absolute scandal that American women continue to earn just $0.77 for every dollar men earn.” (Sen. Mikulski) There should not be a gender pay gap. Workers should be given salaries based on their work ethics, degrees, and academic credentials.
The United States Constitution is a beloved document of this country. In this document many powers, liberties, and freedoms are given to the citizens of the United States of America. These citizens were first made up of immigrants or settlers from England who wanted a place to live without fear of death, and freedom of liberties. The people who made up the first colonies of the America’s fought long and hard through many generations to get to the point they were at writing the Constitution. Though writing the Constitution was the “icing on the cake” for those who lived in America and those looking to live in America, there was a time when the original
Even though different job experience could have played a part in the gap of wages between individuals, I believe gender played a large role in ones earning potential where I work. The wages should be equal for the same job being done, race and age can also affect ones pay, and as treasurer, I saw firsthand how woman were paid less that men for the same job.
