I saw your add in the news paper asking for help, as a community living trainer. I have read the job description and am interested in working with you and your staff to help maintain a safe, happy atmosphere for Big Horn Enterprises participants. I am qualified for this job because I have grown up around individuals with special needs. My grandmother works with the school district, as a bus aid. She rides the special needs bus with the children and helps them to stay calm and relaxed so the bus driver doesn't have to worry. When I was younger I rode the bus with these individuals to get to and from school. I am Also qualified to work for (BHE) because I can cook, clean and lift more than 50lb. I am also certified in both
Everyday I am blessed to be rewarded with the opportunity to work with Special Education students. Being apart of the students lives has always been a huge part of who I am, and has been since I was a little girl. There is nothing more heartwarming than seeing the smiles on the student's faces, because of you. I work with the students during school, and outside of school. With having my own challenges, I have so much respect for who the kids are and what they go through every day. Building relationships with these amazing people is my passion, and I want to build a future in this path.
From since I was a young child I have always wanted to go into the field of Human Services. As I have grown I have decided that I would go into the Criminal Justice side of Human Services. By this I mean that I still want to help people, but I want to help people who have become criminals or who are on the path of becoming criminals. I especially want to help children and teens who have been in and out of a Juvenal Detention Center. From this passion I have decided that I want to go into one of three careers. These careers are as follows; Juvenile Defense Attorneys, Juvenile Counselor, or Juvenile Corrections Officer.
I have been working with the Coweta County School System since August of 2000. I began as a paraprofessional working with students with Autism through the Emory Autism Program. I enjoyed working with special needs students so much that I entered the TAPP program to obtain my teaching certificate. I began working at East Coweta Middle School in the fall of 2002 and am still currently working there as an interrelated special education teacher. I have taught resource, collaborative, and co-teach classes. I have even had one year where I worked one-on-one with a student that required specialized instruction.
Starting this position at 17 years old presented some challenges. With the experience of growing up in the projects, going to inner city public schools, I struggled with my first year working with these kids because I was still one of them. We shared common beliefs and perspectives on our educational system, understanding its inequalities, in result, leveling our aspirations. I struggled with having confidence in my advocacy for them because I knew that administration in these schools looked at me as one of them, and truthfully, I did to. I struggled to come to grips with my truth, that I was a product of a flawed educational system that violates cultural, human, and civil rights everyday and blames it on the students. Now, I am working for them, fulfilling these same duties as an ISD Instructor.

Recently, I have volunteered at my school and helped out incoming sixth graders. I communicate well with children as I am able to get them to listen and pay attention. I am now retired after a 37 year career in human services with the state of Minnesota. I will help my students get ready for a successful move from the school environment to the real-life environment. I believe that my students are not disabled they are just different as in everyone. All human beings have a different gift or talent that they carry. It is my responsibility to identify those gifts because they are often overlooked. Most people go on thinking about what special needs children cannot do, but I will focus more on their gifts.
6.) What are the weakest subjects in school and strongest subjects in school and why?
As an educator I feel it’s very important help out our students by asking other educators what they have done in their past with secondary special education services within their job title, I really received interesting information. For example, my principal attends all IEP meetings along with making sure those students have the correct hours of special education classes designated by the IEP team. Also he must be constantly thinking about the laws involved with discipline that takes place with special education students. This is really mind blowing because having all these task for one person to follow through on would be very time consuming. I believe our principal is very helpful at wanting to help all of our students not just special education students.
All of my education has been within the low income communities that I have resided in. My first professional experience within a low income community was working with Ridgewood Bushwick Senior Citizens Council. I was an after school counselor responsible for tutoring students of high-need schools in various subjects as well as creating lessons in those subjects during holiday programming. I have also worked with youth of low income communities through the Youth Ministry program at St Martin of Tours. I began volunteer work there at age fourteen. Through the program we have been able to provide youth of the community a space to discuss their life and faith, as well gain their own volunteer experience within the parish, and the larger community.
I love my job. I encounter many problems and situations throughout days and am able to learn new things about myself or others. My students have been diagnosed with a disability separating them from every else and the list of things they can't do is very long and consist of many daily activities or 'basic' actions. Instead of focusing on these I direct my attention and time towards what they can achieve and when they put their mind to it "[they] can do anything."
