"All fiction has to have a certain amount of truth in it to be powerful." This is a quote from leading fantasy writer and bestselling author, George R.R. Martin. In his novel, A Clash of Kings, Martin depicts a dark and grimy setting in which war is a constant theme, a setting very much similar to that of Lord of the Rings and Beowulf. A Clash of Kings is only the second of thirteen novels in Martin's book series, A Song of Ice and Fire. The first novel in the book series, A Game of Thrones, undoubtedly left readers with many unanswered questions. It concluded with the death of preeminent characters, King Robert Baratheon and Ned Stark. After King Robert Baratheon's unexpected death, rulers from different Houses across the Seven Kingdoms claimed to deserve the vacant position on his throne, which was referred to as the Iron Throne. In the midst of a consistent struggle to obtain power, Martin concentrates on four royal families: House Baratheon, House Stark, House Lannister, and House Targaryen. Each House has at least one member of their family that believes they are the rightful heir to the Iron Throne. The battles fought to decide the new ruler of the Seven Kingdoms was often referred to in the book as the War of the Five Kings. In his novel, A Clash of Kings, George R.R.
