A Family Tradition
Every year we have a tradition at Christmas that dates back to the 1960’s. Each year around Christmas, all three families create a Yule log of their kind. A Yule log is a log-shaped cake eaten during the party before Christmas.
This year my sister had the best idea ever, plus it was really easy to make. She used Ho Ho’s as her cake product, and shaped them as a log. She also used icing to cover her little secret. We all thought it was a great idea!! It was the day of the party and we haven’t even started. It was the perfect idea because it wasn’t time consuming.
Family came pouring in, the logs looked great!! However, ours was the only one that looked like a log, the other two were white, which didn't really make
My family tradition is that when a daughter turns fifteen the parents thought a party called a quinceañera. My parents invited friends and family members to celebrate this happy occasion. In a mexican culture they do a quinceañera to show the transformation of a young girl into womenhood. The quinceañera is the last party to show that the girls are no longer little girls in the eyes of society.
Many families during the month of December are busy shopping for Christmas presents, decorating a Christmas tree, and getting ready for Santa Clause. For those families celebrating Hanukkah this can conclude of preparing Latkes, singing Ma’Oz Tzur, and lighting the candles of the Menorah.
In this paper I will discuss Social Theories such as Structural Functionalism, Conflict theory; with emphasis on Karl Marx’s early work and how it relates to the conflict theory and Symbolic interaction. I intend to define and discuss relevant sociological terms of these theories and how these theories could apply to my favorite holiday which is Christmas.
All families have a different Christmas tradition. Whether it be opening one gift on Christmas eve, leaving cookies for Santa, or sitting around a decorated tree telling stories. In my family, every Christmas eve, my mom would read me the book “The Night Before Christmas”. This was my favorite part of Christmas eve because I would get to hear my mom’s gentle voice tell the story. I always admired how she could flow words together to make sentences with ease. How she can effortlessly pronounce the vintage language that created a story I loved so much. Seeing this every christmas eve made me yearn to be able to read just like her one day.
Mardi Gras is a big deal mainly because Louisiana is the only state that celebrates it. As always, there is a famous dish that comes along with this holiday and it is King Cake. King Cake is a dessert that is made up of bread, filling, and colorful icing. King Cake was created in the mid-1800s and was made to celebrate the 12th night after Christmas. This dessert represents the coming of the three kings or three wise men (Dave). There are many simple steps to creating a King Cake. After creating the strips of dough for the King Cake, some braids then bakes the strips together which creates the unique look to the dessert. Some people may wonder what makes this thick piece of bread a dessert. Well, after the dough bakes into its unique form, someone splatters icing all over the cake and covers the dough in Mardi Gras colored sprinkles (purple, green and gold). Sometimes King Cakes will be made with different kinds of filling such as, cream cheese, strawberry, apple, or other types. The Mardi Gras colored sprinkles that are on King Cakes symbolize powerful words. Purple stands for justice, green stands for faith, and gold stands for power. The meanings of the colors were created in 1892 during the Rex Parade (Dave). The world’s largest King Cake was baked in 1998 in Baton Rouge, Louisiana and it weighed 350 pounds (Dave). There is a secret ingredient that someone inserts in each King Cake and that is
Me and my sister decide to throw a small house party. We really didn 't plan it right because we had

The first tradition that I want to talk about is the Christmas tree. Every year, Iand my family go into the bush to get a tree. We find one that looks good and chop it down and use the top. It’is a lovely tradition. The history of the Christmas tree is really vast and substantial. A look at the history of the tree only shows how extensive this history actually is. According to History.com Christmas trees used to

For example, at Christmas we have your normal decorations and then we also have Flick family decorations. This consists of old mini pie tins put into the shape of bells with ribbon around it. My grandparents made these when they were first married because they could afford a tree with a lights but no ornaments. They made these decorations and have kept them ever since. My sister and I love asking about the story of the pie tins. My grandma will share, “It reminds us where we came from and how far we’ve come as a family.” Pie tin christmas ornaments will forever be one of my favorite traditions. In addition to holiday traditions, my brothers and I always have cake wars during our birthday parties when we’re all together. Our birthdays all go June, July, August, and two in September. This means that we are usually lucky enough to celebrate outside. Ever since we were little, it wouldn’t be uncommon for whoever’s birthday it was to end up with their face in the cake. As we got older, we learned to “fight back” and everyone usually ended up with cake in their hair and on their
interrupted by the sound of glass breaking. We all thought it was the Green Police coming to find us. Mr.Frank motioned for me to turn off the light so I reached for it, but lost my balance and fell with a crash. Whoever was downstairs froze, then ran down the steps. Mother and Father got really upset. Mother begged Father to get our money to attempt to buy the Green Police out, but Father refused. Mr. Frank went downstairs to find out what was happening. After a while, he wasn’t back and everyone was worried. I offered to go downstairs to look for Mr. Frank, but my dad pushed me away from the door and told me I had already done enough. It was an accident! I didn’t
At my house we are preparing to break the spell over one of the first deceptions we perpetrated on our children. That is correct, we are bracing to break the news about Santa Claus. It is a moment that I feel a little apprehension about. That moment when one or both of my kids ask us if Santa is real and expect a real answer from us.
In the Northern Hemisphere, this can vary from December 20 to December 23. In the Southern Hemisphere, it is around June 21. Yule begins the day before the Winter Solstice at sundown, and ends the day of at sundown. The Winter Solstice is the shortest day of the year, the days will now start getting longer and longer. Yule celebrates the return of the sun. The rebirth of the Oak King was celebrated by our ancestors, he returned to give life and to warm the earth. Yule is all about rebirth and the renewal of life, following death and the end of the harvest at Samhain. Evergreen branches, symbols of rebirth and renewal, can be placed around the house as decoration. Holly can also be added to the pieces of evergreen as it is a masculine symbol of the Holly King who relinquishes the throne to the Oak King. Holly is also believed to be able to ward against evil spirits. Mistletoe is also a common decoration, it is a fertility symbol and represents the female element. If you wish, place a Yule Tree inside the house and decorate it with elements sacred to the Gods and Goddesses that you wish to honor. The Yule Tree represents the Tree of Life. It is also common to have a Yule Log, usually oak, and placed inside the fireplace. The Yule Log is lit from a piece of the previous years log. The ashes of the log may be kept and gifted for good luck. There are many similar celebrations that occur around Yule. One of the most well known,
Christmas is meant for joy and laughter, not injuries and pain. Each year there are hundreds of injuries that occur on the morning of December 25th. When the holiday approaches Americans love to get into the Christmas spirit. Each family celebrates Christmas with their own traditions and rituals that determine their holiday activities. I would have never thought that my family’s traditions for Christmas morning would help me shape my values.
