A Gathering of Days “A kind gesture can reach a wound that only compassion can heal” -Steve Maraboli. In a Gathering of Days, Cathrine had to choose whether or not she was going to show compassion to a slave. Everyone Agrees Cathrine did give the blanket to the slave. But some believe she should have, and some think she should not have. Cathrine should have left the blanket for the slave for three main reasons, The slave needed help, He was trying to escape, and she could help someone in need. The first reason Cathrine should have given the blanket to the slave is that the slave was in need of help. It was in the middle of winter and the slave had to be cold as ice. The slave was also a runaway, which means anyone could capture him
“A kind gesture can reach a wound that only compassion can heal”. This quote by Steve Maraboli may be hard to understand, but the Holocaust texts: Night by Elie Wiesel, “A Three Year Old Saves His Mother” by Peter Gorog and “Jakob's Story” by Jakob Blankitny are great examples of where compassion is necessary to fight the despair in heartbreaking situations. In each work, compassion shows up from unexpected sources, helps motivate people to survive, and creates greater unification.
My first visit to Daybreak consisted mostly of learning about the facility and helping the girls work on their team building projects. When we first arrived, I begin to realize how serious the situation these girls are in is. I was told to put a lock on my phone and to not share too much information about myself. At first I was extremely nervous, but once we entered the common room with all the girls I started to feel more comfortable. These girls have been through more then I could ever imagine. I have been sheltered from drug abuse for most of my life and I never could have thought that girls so young could get caught up in hard drugs such as crack and heroin.

Following the Federation of Australia on 1 January 1901, enthusiasm for a national day of celebration began across the country. In response, the Wattle Day League formed in September 1909 to campaign for the establishment of such a national day. Their aim was to promote patriotic pride among Australians and ‘Australian Britons’ with the first South Australian branch forming in August 1910. On 8 January 1913 Wattle Day became federalised as a day of celebration seeing the wattle blossom become incorporated into the design of the Commonwealth Arms. After the outbreak of the First World War the Wattle Day League shifted its efforts to the home front and focussed on raising funds for the troops overseas and commemorating the war. The
During the time period of the frontier, American development has spread over the westward area due to the rapid effectiveness of Americanization. The frontier removed people from their origins and fused them into a mix of people. Also, it shaped democracy in order to allow the public to participate and form an organized government. Lastly, it led to American nationalism, which is, extreme pride of a country. The American Frontier has helped unite the country because of the effects that resulted in an diverse nation.
Charity was still piqued that Charles had blatantly disobeyed and followed her out of camp- next time, she would pay better attention when she left camp- However, she was thankful that he was there to help her, else, she would have had a heck of a time, trying to tote the deer back to camp,
It was said by Douglass that “The rule is, no matter how coarse the food, only let there be enough of it.”(Douglass, 62). On Colonel Lloyd’s plantation, where Douglass was labored, they were given a monthly allowance of food, and if a slave ran out before the next allowance day, they were not given any more. Children’s allowances were given to their mother or the elder that was taking care of them. Since they were not doing hard manual labor, they were given only a small amount of clothing once a year that would barely last the whole year through. Because of this, many children would be found naked running around the plantations until new clothing was given to them. Along with the minute amount of food and clothing given to the slaves, they were denied beds and slept on the cold ground without any warmth; not even a simple blanket. Although the slaves had no beds, Douglass wrote “They find less difficulty from the want of beds, than from the want of sleep…” (Douglass, 27). With this statement Douglass tried to get across the idea that since the slaves were kept up throughout the day, working long, excruciating hours, they did not complain about that lack of beds, for they were too tired to care where they slept. They were simply worried about attaining the little amount of sleep that they were allowed to
On Victoria Day, I made my family a small meal consisting of salad, tomato soup, chicken pot pie, and cookies. Albeit simple on paper, it was much more difficult in practice. For one, I am a terrible chef, so making a four course meal was not the easiest of tasks. I even prepared the soup and cookies a day in advance, but even so, it was very tiring and many problems arose. For example, only until the day before had I realized that they did not like cheesecake. So I had to make do with what I had leftover in my kitchen and made some very cakey cookies. Another incident occurred when I was making my chicken pot pie, I realized that I had bought the wrong dough. Rather than buying puff pastry, I took bought biscuit dough. Having missed a key

The easiest way to see that workers are losing ground is to look at workers’ wages as a percentage of GDP, or how much labors are earning compared to the nations collective wealth as a whole over the course of a year. Charles Hugh Smith covered this disturbing trend in an article published by the Daily Reckoning. Smith explains that throughout history wages made up roughly fifty percent of America’s GDP. But since 1970 the share of wages as a percent of GDP has experienced a slow and persistent decline, to where it stands today, where wages as a percent of GDP make up only forty-two percent. Smith goes on to explain that the downward trend has been so persistent that there were only three times since 1970 where wages as a share of GDP actually
Today is Thursday June 18, and thankfully I am feeling better after a whole week of sickness. Yesterday was a slow day I woke up late and did chores which I felt was a workout because by the time I was done I sweating like crazy. I felt that since my body was sick, my exertions felt twice as weak. Afterwards I just wanted to lay down in my bed and never get up but I decided since I was already sweaty I'd do more. So I got up and did some stretching, yo-ga, and some sit ups. Those I did to make-up a little for what I was missing.
The events that took place during G.O. weekend were fun, informative, and beneficial. The events that were most impactful for me were the faculty and department meetings and the informational skits. The faculty and departmental meetings stood out to me because it was very exciting to meet the faces of your major’s department before the first day of classes. The informational skits were impactful because it displayed real, scary issues that take place frequently on college campuses across the nation and provided ways to handle these situations.
The Good Life party picked the name ‘The Good Life’ because we feel strongly that life must be preserved. While the government is doing what they can to keep people alive and safe, there are still some issues, like abortion, the death penalty, and guns, that if resolved, would keep more people alive. Humans are not God, and therefore we cannot make the decision about whether someone gets to live or die. For example, we are pro-life when it come to abortion. Every abortion takes away an innocent life. We are also against the death penalty because no crime is worthy of being sentenced to death. The Good Life is also pro gun control because with guns so easy to get, they can easily end up in the wrong hands, resulting in shootings, which causes
America did not really have a good future, America was not even America at first, it was
Contrary to the belief that medicine should be solely clinical in order to preserve professionalism, narrative medicine is rapidly growing in the medical world and opposes clinical medicine by incorporating feelings and connections. Narrative medicine is the idea that doctors should be empathetic and must learn their patient’s story to build bonds that assist in curing the patient of illness, while supporting them mentally and emotionally. Rita Charon, a distinguished physician and professor at Columbia University, states “narrative medicine proposes an ideal of care and provides the conceptual and practical mean to strive toward that idea” (Charon). Medicine is often a difficult puzzle to solve, but being a genuine, caring human being is not. In his heart gripping book, The Measure of Our Days, Jerome Groopman explores the patient physician relationship giving insightful knowledge on the decision making in diagnosis and in treatment of different patients, but more importantly being a benevolent person. One consistent piece in Groopman’s puzzle of medicine is compassion, as he promotes it in every aspect of his career because it helps the victims of illness and disease understand their ailments, accept their fate, all the while building trust with their physicians. In Groopman’s retelling of his and his patient’s intertwined quest for cures and treatments, he exhibits the necessity of narrative medicine’s transgression into medicine for both physicians and patients.
