A Prayer for Owen Meany, by John Irving is about two best friends, John and Owen who are bound to one another. With the draft enlistment for Vietnam coming closer, it is time for John to make a hasty decision. The year of 1967 not only represents an important part in their lives, but it so happens to change John’s life forever. On the Rainy River, by Tim O’Brien, O’Brien tells the story of him as a young twenty-one-year old adult who faces the hard decision of whether to go to Vietnam or flee to Canada. The thoughts of being killed or disowned by his parents leads O’Brien to flee his hometown and head towards Canada. John would not have made the right decision if it weren’t for his best friend Owen Meany. Without Owen help’s, John would have be all alone left to make this choice without the help of others. To John, Owen was the rock that supported him through the difficult times that occurred in his life. John was able to make the right decision because of Owen. The amount of advice Owen gave John made him feel appreciative to have such a good friend like him. With the help of Owen, John was able to find his true calling in life. He knew that war was not for him, but he did not know how to get out of it. In On the Rainy River, Tim O’Brien is still indecisive of whether he should go to Vietnam and fight or dodge the war and flee to Canada. On one hand the thought of being in the Vietnam war frightens O’Brien because he “had taken a modest stand against the war nor did he want to lose his life in a war that he couldn’t choose”. O’Brien “did not want to die, not there” (O’Brien 47). O’Brien knew for a fact that war was not meant for him because he lacked the emotional, moral strength a soldier needed to be fit for battle. From O’Brien’s perspective, he believed that if men wanted to “put their own precious fluids on the line”(O’Brien 45). Then that was fine, as long as it didn’t involve him, he was okay with people going into battle. At the time, Tim knew that it was a man 's duty to go fight in Vietnam and serve their country, but the thought of serving his country never crossed
