Africa had been the target of colonialism and slavery for many years. The colonies that European’s developed during fifteenth and sixteenth century were the main reason that started slave trade in Africa.

When Europeans arrived along the West African coast, slavery already existed on the continent, however slavery in Africa and the brutal form of slavery that would develop in the Americas were completely different. African slavery was more like European serfdom. For example, in the Ashanti Kingdom of West Africa, slaves could marry, own property and even own slaves. And slavery ended after a certain number of years of servitude. Most importantly, African slavery was never passed from one generation to another, and it lacked the racist element that whites were masters and blacks were slaves.

Slavery has been an inevitable part of history. Slavery has been around since the Babylonian Empire . Slavery was even, present in Ancient Greece. The Byzantine-Ottoman wars and the Ottoman wars resulted in the enslavement of large numbers of Christians. However, it was during the Middle Ages and moving forward that slavery played a prominent role. Both the Dutch and the British played important roles in the Atlantic slave trade, especially after 1600. When, the New World was discovered, slavery was not based on race until much later.Slaves consisted of a few people brought from Africa and native peoples where the newly discovered land . “African Perspectives on Colonialism” is a book written by A. Adu Boahen. This book classifies the African responses to European colonialism in the 19th century. Boahen begins with the status of Africa in the last quarter of the 19th century and follows through the first years of African independence. This book deals with a twenty year time period between 1880 and 1900. Boahen talks about when Africa was seized and occupied by the Imperial Powers of Europe. Eurocentric points of view dominated the study of this era but Boahen gives us the African perspective. There are always two sides of the story and Boehen tells us the side less talked about informing us of what he knows.

Slavery began in the late 16th century to early 18th century. Africans were brought to American colonies by white masters to come and work on their plantations in the South. They were treated harshly with no payments for all their hard work. In addition, they lived under harsh living conditions, and this led to their resistance against these harsh conditions. The racism towards the African Americans who were slaves was at its extreme as they did not have any rights; no civil nor political rights.

The slave trade in the North American colonies began to grow in the 1600s. The African slave trade sourced their slaves from many different West African villages and countries. The business of slavery was a growing and profitable field, not only for the slavers, but also for the slaveholders. With the decrease of indentured servants, settlers in the English colonies looked for a new source of labor to satisfy their growing labor demands. The next source was Africa. “By the 1690s slaves outnumbered indentured servants four to one” (45). Europeans largely disregarded the ethical dilemma posed by slavery due to the European view of Africans and their culture as uncivilized, foreign, and heathen (44). The first Africans to arrive in the colonies were not slaves instead they were considered servants just as other Europeans that worked under a contract that would allow them to be free after they have worked for several years. This contract would include land, their freedom, and clothes. Years after, the more Africans that arrived to the colonies the more the Europeans started to recognize slavery, put laws towards the slaves, and treat the Africans like they would treat the Indians like animals.

Slavery can be traced back to when the Europeans began settling in the North American continent.

The transatlantic slave trade began in the 15th century, after the Portuguese started exploring the coast of West Africa. This had a long term effect on Africa because even though it started out benefiting the upper class in Africa, the long term effect was devastating. When Europeans started to enter Africa, they enjoyed “the triple advantage of guns and other technology, widespread literacy, and the political organization necessary to sustain expensive programs of exploration and conquest”(Doc 4). Africa’s relations with Europe depended on common interests, which Europe did not share. Europe’s contact with Africa, involving economic exchanges and political relationships, was not mutually beneficial.

Contrary to what we learned in school, the transatlantic slave trade actually began in the 1450s when the first Africans arrived in Europe. You see, slavery existed in some capacity since the beginning of human interaction. As early as 2,000 years ago, the Romans enslaved people of color as servants. Around 600 AD the Arab Muslims started enslaving Africans. However, slavery was not based on race until Europeans began slave trading with Africans. It is also worth mentioning that Africa had a slavery system that existed within the country long before the Europeans arrived. The African slavery system was based on tribal ethnicities and economic status as thousands of Africans were captured during various wars between African nations and sold into slavery. Europeans started enslaving American’s because they wanted cheap labors. Enslaved American’s usually work as domestic servants or on plantation. Black, white and non-muslin slaves had some rights. Some were slaves were generals and had the right to have their own slaves. Native slaves started dying of diseases and the America’s need replacements . “Slaves were only imported to the New World in great numbers after other sources of labor proved inadequate”.The demand for cheap labors were so high and many started dying so they looked to Africa for assistance because Europe and Africa were so close that most Africans already built and immunity to Europeans diseases and they most likely wouldn’t try runaway because the did not have knowledge of America’s . This is when the buying and selling of Africans to work in America’s started it is known as the Atlantic Slave Trade. “Africans dominated both the buying and selling of slaves into the Atlantic slave trade”.African merchants would also capture African slaves. There were people who disagree with it and tried stop it but the people who agree with it started making secret trade routes to transport slaves. The voyage across the Atlantic Ocean was very dangerous and many Africans died. Merchants brutally beat Africans on the ships. Some enslaved Africans rebelled while others just accepted conditions. They suffered from low

The world wars had hit the Europeans so hard that they seriously and urgently needed a source of labor that would help in the rebuilding of their cities and mine their minerals such as coal, gold, and silver among others. They decide to turn to Africa for this labor and therefore, slave trade was born in the middle of the 15th century on the continent. The first batch of slaves was imported to Cuba.

Consider how Africa’s geography has changed over time. What positive and negative effects would these changes have had on human populations on the continent? As their new homes changed they were able to adapt due to their innovative mindset. This can be attributed to the new found organization thanks to language. Allowing Africans to grow and expand throughout the entire continent. Other factors that can be attributed are the change in geography for some parts such as the Sahara drying out and swamps and lakes disappeared.

Slavery developed in the Americas because of exploration and need or labor. Europeans captured Africans and transported them across the deadly Middle Passage, to the Americas, where they would be forced to poor under harsh conditions. Slavery had many lasting effects. Africa was depopulated, and Africans in America lost their cultures and identity while Europeans made money from the resources being exported in the Americas at the expense of Africans’ lives and culture.
