In Arthur miller’s nonfiction The Crucible January 22, 1953 he describes that Abby was not the reason for the witchcraft hysteria. In the play The Crucible a group of young girls head into the woods which at first was just to have fun, dance, and mess around. But as back in those times if they were found dancing in the woods they would be considered a witch. The group of girls then started throwing leaves (just to pretend) into a pot and started to wish for a guy they wanted. As soon as they did this Abby drank blood from a chicken and when she did that Reverend Parris spotted the girls in the woods. All of them broke off in different directions except Abby and Betty they were crying and scared of Reverend Parris. The girls became the …show more content…
Elizabeth and John were sort of like Abby’s second parents. Abby was just a kid when her parents died, she then became a live in maid for the Proctor’s. So when John did this to his so called “ daughter” she must have been in a great deal of trauma. After John finally realized what he is doing is a terrible thing to do, he tries to stop before anyone finds out. But the irony of that is everyone in the town he has committed a mortal sin, adultery. Elizabeth had some suspicion on what was going on which leads to the reason of why kicked out of the house. She did not know for sure if he actually did do that with Abby though. But if you’re in a room with a girl for a couple hours it is kind of obvious. When Abby got kicked out of the house she was already obsessed with John. So she wanted to seek revenge on Elizabeth for what she did. She wanted John and Elizabeth gone and she had the perfect …show more content…
At first they were denying it and wanted nothing to do with it until Abby realized this was the perfect idea to ruin Elizabeth Proctor. So now because of John the witch craft hysteria is about to begin. Abby first started to accuse people one by one to lead up to Elizabeth, she had to start from somewhere. She accused all of them of being witches or preforming witchcraft which almost all of them they didn’t but judge Danforth still believed in the girls. At first no one really cared about the people who were being hung and killed but then as soon as they saw John being hung and Rebecca Nurse everything changed. The people realized all the people being hung were the people that caused her pain in life so everyone in the village ended up ignoring her. After Abby got John killed she stopped all the accusing and the witch craft hysteria stopped for good. This was the last thing Abby wanted was for john to be dead.
Whose fault was it that caused the witchcraft hysteria? Just caused not going. If it never started it would have never ended so many innocent lives. What causes love to do such crazy things? John is 31 years old with a wife and two kids. Abby is only 17 who lost her parents as a kid and is practically an orphan, who seems to be the vulnerable one here. It was not Abby’s fault she had to do all of that. She was lost of all hope in life but then john gave her false hope that she would be happy
She put a needle in a doll then had Mary Warren give it to Elizabeth. Later that evening, Abby impaled herself with a needle making it look like Elizabeth did voodoo on the doll to her. If Abby did not do this, Elizabeth would not have went to prison and John would have been alive. The only reason that John was accused is because he was defending Elizabeth in court and Abby turned the tables on him. During the scene where the girls were having an outburst in court, to John Mary Warren said, “You are the Devil’s man” (110)! Abby basically forced Mary into accusing John because she was going to accuse Mary if not. This scene shows how vindictive Abby truly
In act II John Proctor is told by Mary that Elizabeth was accused and the court has come to her to take her to jail. John shows a lot of tension with Elizabeth in the beginning of act II. “I am wondering how I may prove what she had told Me.” said John, “You were alone with her?” retaliated Elizabeth. (1116) Elizabeth suspected John of adultery and is still worried about it. John is worried if he calls out Abby then their secret of Adultery will be out. “Spare me! You forget nothin’ and forgive nothin’. Learn charity, women…” (1116) In this quote it shows what John thinks about his wife after 8 months of not having Abby in their house. John’s attempts to save Salem has failed and he and his wife are sent to
John and Elizabeth proctor were a happily married couple living in salem or so you think. That was until john decides to cheat on his wife for abigail williams, a servant who his wife had just fired. Soon after the affair John's wife Elizabeth found out and she wasn't happy. John continually got the cold shoulder from her for seven months after and she still doesn't trust him. She is now being arrested for witchcraft and will either confess or be hung. Abigail was the one who accuses Elizabeth of witchcraft because she wants john all to herself. This is probably one of those times john is wishing Elizabeth would have forgave him for the wrong thing he did and known he shouldn't have done that.
In The Crucible, I assume that the character Abigail is a static character. Abigail is considered a static character for the reason that no matter what her feelings never change. She does whatever she is yearning to be happy with herself. It makes no difference if she is hurting other people as long she is joyous. An example is how she accuses Elizabeth Proctor of being a witch even though it's not true. She only did it for the reason that she thought she would be able to be with John Proctor. The character John Proctor is a dynamic character. John is considered a dynamic character because he changes his feelings in the entire play. In the beginning he was a quiet farmer and now he is a brave man with a great deal of courage. In the beginning
Have you ever thought about how one small decision, can have such big consequences? Not just for an individual, but for a whole society. In the play The Crucible, by Arthur Miller, conflicts arise when Abigail, a young teen in Salem, Massachusetts, is found worshipping the devil along with two other main characters, Betty and Tituba, and many other girls. After being discovered, Betty faints and does not wake up. Accusations of witchcraft quickly spread throughout Salem and Reverend Parris questions Abigail about the discovery. From here, Abigail begins her lies and manipulations for her own benefit. Abigail is guilty with corrupting her society with wrongdoing because she is manipulative, selfish, and vindictive.
In Arthur Miller’s play, The Crucible, Miller demonstrated that it was Abigail’s flaws- lust, jealousy, and mendacity- that led her to be responsible the most for the tragedy of the witch-hunt in Salem. The Crucible focuses of the finding of young girls and a slave messing around in the woods, trying to conjure spirits from the dead. Rather than admit to their actions and face the consequences, the girls accuse everyone else of the crimes they were guilty of. Abigail Williams is the person who caused much of the drama in this story. She bears much responsibility for everyone meeting with Tituba in the woods. Once Parris discovers this meeting, Abigail attempts to keep her actions a secret because it would possibly reveal her affair with Proctor. Abigail lies to cover up her affair with proctor, and to stop the charges of witchcraft in order to prevent the terrible punishments that go along with the accusations.
Because of her behaviour in the court in general, 19 people die. But Abigail is not only manipulating the girls and the judges, John Proctor is also kind of in her control. Due to Abby’s and John’s affair he can’t go to the court and speak against Abby without exposing himself. Mary tells him “Abby’ll charge lechery on you, Mr. Proctor!”(Miller 80), which is the reason why he doesn’t immediately take action and speaks out in the court after Abigail’s confession that there is no witchcraft happening in Salem. When John finally confesses his affair to the court and Mary speaks out
Abby was misled by John’s one time affair with her because “ There is a promise made in any bed”(2. ). John was oblivious to the fact that he had made this promise to young Seventeen year old Abby. Leaping at her chance to get rid of John’s wife, Abby accuses her and many others of witchery which is forbidden in Salem. When hearing that she was accused Elizabeth told John that Abby “thinks to kill, me then to take my place”(2. ). Every accusation of witchery that Abby made was rash and based simply off of her want for John. Procter’s sin caused an unforeseen tumbling effect that would bring down the majority of Salem with
In the play Rev. Parris discovers Betty, his niece Abigail , and Tituba dancing in the woods and suspects witchcraft. The “dancers” coordinate a story they will tell to the people. Abigail and John has a lot of conflict because she accuses Elizabeth Proctor of witchcraft but Elizabeth can’t go straight to the gallows she has to go to jail because she is pregnant and have to wait until she has the baby. Now that Abigail accuses Elizabeth she also accuses all these people for no reason so she doesn’t get hanged for witchcraft. In the play Elizabeth thinks she’s helping John by lying but she’s making him look more of a liar to all of Salem. In the play Giles Corey feels guilty because his wife Martha Corey has been accused of witchcraft because he said she reads
She’d previously been his servant, and they’d had an affair. When Elizabeth Proctor, John’s wife, found out about the affair between the girl and her husband, she put Abigail out of her house. John then decided to end the affair and start trying to make things better between his wife and himself. But, Abigail was still in love and still wanted to be with John. She would do anything to get rid of Elizabeth and take her place in John’s life. This is the reason she went into the woods in the first place. She wanted to “cast a spell” and make John love her and only her. John came up to her and told her he knew she was lying about all the women being witches, and he told her to stop and leave him and his family alone. At this point Abby was mad that John no longer wanted to be with her, so she decided she’d frame Elizabeth as being a witch. She’d used Mary Warren, the Proctor’s new servant, to do it. Mary had made Elizabeth a poppet and stuck a needle in the stomach for safe keeping. When Abigail saw her do that, she knew that that was the perfect way to frame Elizabeth. Abby stuck herself in the stomach and told everyone that it was Elizabeth’s spirit that’d done it. So when they found Elizabeth with the poppet everyone assumed what Abigail said had to be
In the play, John Proctor and his wife Elizabeth were in a marriage that was falling apart. John Proctor was having an affair with their former maid, Abigail Williams, which is adultery and adultery is against the law in Salem. Though the play doesn’t directly state that Elizabeth had knowledge of the affair, evidence given has caused the audience to infer that she knew. Later in the play he later told Elizabeth that he was having an affair with their former maid. As Abigail rose to power in the play, John has cut all ties with Abigail concerning the affair.
Obsessing over him and getting Elizabeth (John Wife) out of the picture. When she worked for the Proctors, she and John had a brief affair. John regretted it almost immediately, but Abigail still loves John and she not only is antagonistic toward Elizabeth. Abigail sees Elizabeth as an impediment to her own happiness and she thinks if Elizabeth is out of the way, she can have John. According to the play, “ABIGAIL, with a bitter anger: Oh, I marvel how such a strong man may let such a sickly wife be—PROCTOR, angered at himself as well: You'll speak nothin' of Elizabeth! ABIGAIL: She is blackening my name in the village! She is telling lies about me! She is a cold, sniveling woman, and you bend to her! Let her turn you like a—PROCTOR, shaking her: Do you look for whippin'? ( ). Abigail also accuses Elizabeth of spreading rumors about her in the town trying to have her lover all to herself. Though Abigail pretends she’s angry at Elizabeth Proctor for damaging her reputation, the more powerful emotion is envy of Elizabeth for her marriage to John Proctor. Here she resorts to petty name-calling to cast doubt in John’s
In The Crucible, a young group of girls lies to officials about people being witches, thereby instigating the fear of the devil in Salem. Abigail Williams, who is the leader of the girls, uses this fear to manipulate the town to do her will. Abby carries the most weight and, therefore, is the most culpable for the severity of the witch trials
Abby and all the other girls in the town are caught in the woods by reverend Hale conjuring up spirits. Some of the girls that were caught in the woods became very ill and the idea of witchcraft arose. In the mist of all this John Proctor was having an affair on his wife with abby while abby was working on the farm and Goody Proctor found out and fired abby. Abby is trying to get rid of Goody Proctor to have John all to herself so she accuses Goody Proctor of witchcraft and Goody is taken to court for it. Mary Warren was accused of witchcraft so Mary accused John of witchcraft because john tried to get Mary to sign her name to the devil so she accused him of it. Reverend Hale is trying to get everyone in the jail to confess that they are witches
Abigail’s revenge is set off when Elizabeth fires her because she found out about the affair with her husband, John. In the novel it states. “She is blackening my name in the village! She is telling lies about me! She is a cold, sniveling woman, and you bend to her.” (Miller,13) Abby claims that Elizabeth only means to wreck her reputation. In reality she knew exactly what was under wraps. Abby is uncle was the minister of Salem, an impeccable reputation was significant to the family. Any harm to this was sure to provoke a counterattack, especially when dealing with such a sensitive topic. Abby detests the fact that Elizabeth has some control over John. It tears her up to know she cannot have him. Therefore she must eliminate her without accounting the cost. Elizabeth suspected this all. She knew that the wrath of a teenage girl blinded by “love” has no limits. Elizabeth sates, “She wants me dead. I knew all week it would come to this!” (Miller,74) Abby made it clear that her revenge had arrived when she accused Elizabeth of witchcraft. She carefully made sure to frame Elizabeth and condemn her to be executed only to take her place as John Proctors wife. Miller demonstrated how vengeance can come from selfish reasoning.
