The examination of Rebecca Nurse was recorded by the Reverend Samuel Parris, whose own young daughter Betty was one of the accusers together Betty's cousin, twelve-year old Abigail Williams. He writes that the examination opened with Hathorne turning his attention not to Nurse, but rather to Abigail Williams. Williams reported to the magistrates that the apparition of Nurse had just that morning, as well as on previous occasions, afflicted her. Shortly after this statement, Ann Putnam, Jr. launched into a "grievous fit" and before Rebecca Nurse even began to testify, the the tone of the examination had been
Imagine causing the deaths of sixteen innocent people for the love of a man. Arthur Miller describes Abigail Williams in, “The Crucible” as a very manipulative and vindictive woman. She tends to be decisive but makes the wrong decisions. She hurts others around her to get what she wants. Abigail thinks very highly of herself and that she can do no wrong. All of her actions are due to her affair with John Proctor. When the Salem trials broke ground Abigail was confident however as they began to demise she seemed like a coward.
Many individuals were killed throughout the Salem Witch Trials, but the first case involved Abigail Williams, Sarah Goode, Sarah Osborne, and Tituba. According to the University of Virginia, “Abigail Williams testified and said that several times last February she had been much afflicted with pains and often pinched by the apparition of Sarah Good, Sarah Osborne, and Tituba.” Due to their inability to explain things at the time, Salem blamed Abigail Williams’ pains, pinches, and fits on witchcraft. As a result, Sarah Osborne was one of the individuals accused of witchcraft.
In the play, The Crucible, by Arthur Miller explains that many people were responsible for the witch trials in Salem. During the time of the witch trials, many innocent people were accused of witchcraft because someone accused them for “revenge.” Abigail Williams, Reverend Hale, and the town’s people were the main source of responsibility for the witch trials. Innumerable amount of people were being accused because of these reasons.
Putnam also falsely accused people, but in a different way. In the play, Putnam used his daughter Ruth to accuse George Jacobs of witchcraft, so he could own Jacob’s land. Putnam also had his wife Ann, accuse Rebecca Nurse of witchcraft, after killing his newborns. While speaking with Hale about Rebecca, “ Francis, with a mocking, half —hearted laugh: For murder, she’s charged! Mockingly quoting the warrant: “ For the marvelous and supernatural murder of Goody Putnam’s babies.”(Miller). Rebecca was later hung after she was accused of murder. Nearly all of Putnam’s false accusations of witchcraft were successful and this caused many people to
Parasites are disgusting, twisted and demonic like beings that can take over your body and destroy you from the inside out. In a the story The Crucible, written by Arthur Miller, there is a character named Abigail Williams and she is the perfect representation of a parasite in the Puritan society. The things she does eats the Puritan society from the inside out. She has committed adultery, she is a filthy liar, and she disobeys her guardians. Because of her filthy ways she has caused some people of Salem, a town in the story, to be hanged to save herself. In this paper, I will provide reasons why I think Abigail Williams is not a pure puritan woman.
During the time of Salem Witch trials or more specially in my case; The Crucible there was this one girl in partially who caught most of the punishment just to shorten a film but nonetheless in The Crucible she shown had shown some traits like scapegoating witchery on others or being greedy for popularity and even having a hunger for power so her 11 year old self could get with a 60 year old.
People do behave differently in groups than they would alone. This is because of the human desire for attention and the desire to fit in. Also, this is due to the peer pressure and the desire to improve self image. This is demonstrated many times in the play, such as when people were accused of being witches, and how they decided to deal with the situation.
I, John Proctor, am writing to you, the officials of the court, to make a confession about the matter of the ongoing Salem Witch Trials. Abigail Williams, a former servant in my household, is not being truthful when she informs the court that the girls taking part in witchcraft in the woods that night. The Devil found its way into my soul and led me astray. I reveal to you that I had an affair with Abigail Williams. This treachery against my wife and relationship with God is now strained and I tell you my darkest secret in hopes of clearing my wife’s name. Abigail herself told me that she and the other girls were only dancing in the woods. I express my regret for ripping up the warrant for Elizabeth’s arrest. However, I do believe that the court has made a mistake. Arresting Elizabeth for
As I was sitting in the meetinghouse enjoying Sunday service, I could not help but be distracted. I traced the sound of someone hollering to the young maid servant Abigail Williams. She’s the orphan who now lives with her uncle, John Proctor. Along with her yelling she seemed to be having a seizure and was throwing herself around the church. She began screaming with terror on her face and pointing up towards the rafters, claiming Martha’s spirit was sitting on one of the old wooden beams next to a so called yellow bird. I followed her finger towards the ceiling but failed to see what she described. Her neighbors tried to hush her disturbing state, but nothing they did helped. All I wanted to do was listen and enjoy my Sunday service, but due
As the old adage says, “you make your bed, you lie in it.” And to that end, a reputation, no matter how clean or protected, cannot stand up to the truth. John proctor is a 35-year-old married man who had an affair with Abigail. Reverend Parris is a pastor of the church; he helps a lot of people including his niece Abigail. Abigail Williams is a 17-year-old girl who is deceitful and has a problem with telling the truth. Through these three characters, Arthur Miller is trying to portray the value of a reputation as negative, due to the effect it could have on an individuals’
Witchcraft: the practice of magic, especially black magic through the use of spells and invocation of spirits. False: appearing to be the thing denoted; deliberately made or meant to deceive. In the town of Salem, Massachusetts, the outbreak of witchcraft was introduced by a twelve-year-old girl of the name Abigail Williams. She cried against many believing that they had caused her to have the violent, physical fits that resulted in hiding under furniture and trying to climb up chimneys. Living with the Reverend of the town supported her name in purity and persuaded those to believe her accusations, but resulted in the loss of twenty people because of these false claims. In Arthur Miller’s play The Crucible, he takes the creator of the witch trials chaos, Abigail Williams, and adds fictitious situations where she represents a stronger antagonist; being involved in an affair, spitefully accusing people, and leading a group of girls in making accusations.
Rebecca Nurse is a pillar of the community, a devoutly religious woman in her seventies. When she is accused of witchcraft, it makes the Reverend Hale pause and reconsider whether the proceedings are just and fair. "Pray, John, be calm. Pause. This will set us all to arguin' again in…
Abigail Williams is a manipulative, vengeful 17 year old girl that will do anything it takes to get what she wants. Abigail is one of the main characters in the play, The Crucible by Arthur Miller. She lost her parents at a young age, and has been living with her uncle for many years. Abigail is directly responsible for the massive hysteria in Salem, which caused innocent people to become accused and executed. Abigail deeply cares about protecting her reputation, even though she had an affair with a married man. Some people may defend Abigail’s character for various reasons. However, her actions throughout the play prove that she is a selfish, villainous character.
Although Arthur Miller waters down the events that took place in Salem, Massachusetts, in his play, The Crucible, one detail stays the same: Abigail Williams. Miller puts a twist on the historical events in Salem to create an interesting story and to satisfy the play as a metaphor for the current state of politics in his eyes, but the antagonist’s name is the same throughout. Abigail is one of the accusers in the witch trials and has only one goal in her life: to be with John Proctor. Her lust for John Proctor, mendacity in the courts of Salem and to the people around her, and remorselessness throughout the play lead her to be most responsible for the witch trials in Salem, and ultimately, to her beloved’s demise.
Hysteria all throughout the village, dancing naked in the woods, hangings and just plain damage all caused by one person. What might her name be, Abigail Williams who was a seventeen year old girl who caused major problems in her town because she started the trend of accusing people of witchcraft. Although few may believe it wasn’t her who caused all this damage Arthur Miller makes it pretty clear in The Crucible that she was to blame. Example one of why this is her fault is she was the one who kind of lead the girls to the forest to dance naked and she drank blood in this ritual as a charm to kill Goody Proctor. The next reason is she had an affair with John. Lastly, she just was constantly throwing names of people out and that started the wave of pretending to be cursed by respected fellow townspeople.
