Is it possible for one person to be capable of bringing down an entire society? Arthur Miller’s novel The Crucible, gives an accurate representation of how one act and one person can be the catalyst for so many atrocious crimes. When we closely examine the motives and actions of Abigail Williams we see just how corrupt and evil a scorned lover can be. She portrays these types of qualities, vengefulness, jealousy, and mendacity through her actions and speech. Abigail Williams shows her flaw of vengefulness when she tried to kill John Proctor’s wife because she is so struck on John and so in love and wants him all to herself. She even went as far as drinking a charm to assure that Proctor’s wife would be killed. “You drank blood Abby! You didn't tell him that! [...], You did, you did! You drank charm to kill John Proctor’s wife! You drank charm to kill Goody Proctor” (Miller 18). Betty, was yelling at Abigail telling her how she was in the wrong and that she was drinking blood to kill Elizabeth Proctor because she loves John and doesn't want Elizabeth to be in the way of her love for him. “The girl, the Williams girl, Abigail Williams, sir. She sat to dinner in Reverend Parris’s house tonight, and without word nor warning’ she falls to the floor. [...] Stuck two inches in the flesh of her belly, he draw the needle out. Where your wife's familiar spirit pushed it in” (Miller 72). Abigail vengefulness causes conflict with Salem and is starting to take effect of innocents.
