Since 1973, abortion has been considered “legal” in the United States. But, just because abortion is legal, does that automatically justify it as moral? The Bible never clearly states “though shall not abort your children.” On the other hand, Exodus 20:13, states “though shall not murder.” Not only does Exodus speak of prohibiting murder, Genesis 9:3, states that “whoever sheds man’s blood, by man his blood shall be shed, for in the image of God He made man.” According to AbortionFacts.com, abortion became legalized in the United States in 1973; however, does declaring something “legal” grant the power to be morally sound as well (The Christian, n.d.)? The Bible uses the term child to describe a “born” and “unborn” baby. According to the …show more content…
As a result, society is using “personhood” to define when a child could be described as an assortment of organs. Researcher, Carl Sagan, estimated that at 6 months a child could be considered to be under the category of “personhood.” Clearly personhood was created to justify the means of abortion. Such ideas were never expressed in the bible. On the contrary, the bible describes personhood as reaching self-actualization. Self-actualization comes from knowing their lord and savior. These two terms are their exact opposite, both may define life but neither would agree on the subject of when a “baby” or “fetus” becomes a human being (The Christian, n.d.). Churches from the early ages understood the Bible’s adversity to abortion. The reason why the Bible doesn’t contain precise scriptures detailing why abortion is condemned is due to the 6th commandment. Exodus 20:13, which states “though shall not murder.” This would pertain to suicide, poison, abortion, and etcetera. Eventually, as the church spread to different regions, those involved didn’t concede with their traditions. Hence, new prohibition were written to forbid abortion due to their Comprehension of the bible (The Christian, n.d.). Christianity’s belief system is founded upon Jesus’s supreme revelations. In addition, his instructions are conveyed within the old Testaments. Which consist of the four gospels and Jewish Scriptures. The Roman Catholic, Protestant
Science tells us that from the moment of fertilization, a fetus is a human. Despite this, however, there is a swarm of controversy surrounding question, when does a fetus become a human? Many people believe that once a baby is conceived, it is considered a living human being. Many of these people believe that whether or not a fetus is a human is chiefly a scientific question. “The question as to when a human being begins is strictly a scientific question, and should be answered by human embryologists - not by philosophers, bioethicists, theologians, politicians, x-ray technicians, movie stars or obstetricians and gynecologists” (Irving). While Irving has a valid point in saying that whether or not a fetus is a human is a question mainly for
Abortion shouldn’t be legal no matter the circumstances. Nobody should have the right to murder an innocent baby. There are thousands and thousands and thousands of homes in America that are willing to adopt. People need to put themselves in the baby’s shoes. What if that was you in the womb and your mom was about to murder you. Finally why go against the bible? The bible says it’s wrong.
Abortion has been progressively restricted in many states across America, and this strong push is coming from believers. This act affects The United States in many ways; Amanda Marcotte from Alternet writes, “thanks to increasingly restrictive state and local laws and overzealous law enforcement, we are seeing a return to pre-Roe back-alley abortions and increasingly criminal treatment of women.” These restrictions, promoted by believers, infringe on women’s rights and contribute to danger of female health.
The issue of abortion is notoriously controversial. Since the Supreme Court’s 1992 ruling in Casey v. Planned Parenthood, states have enacted different restrictions on the procedure. These restrictions vary from state to state. Nineteen states currently have laws prohibiting partial-birth abortion, and forty-one states strictly prohibit abortions except in cases of life-endangerment. One particularly incendiary area of abortion law is that of public funding. However, as of this year there are only seventeen states that cover abortion procedures through public funding. In this paper we will discuss federal abortion legislation, while describing the laws and political ideologies of the following states: Texas, California, New
"Not a person" is a decidedly unscientific argument: it has nothing to do with science and everything to do with someone's own moral or political philosophy, though that someone may not readily admit it. Here is a good time to recite the scientific proofs, and maybe make a philosophical point of your own: We're either persons or property; and even the staunchest abortion defender will be reluctant to call a human child a piece of property. The "classic" arguments from the other side are collapsing under the weight of science. "No one knows when life begins" and "It's a blob of tissue" are frankly on the wane, especially in the context of surgical abortion, which is how the vast majority of abortions are done today. Many say that life begins as soon as conception occurs. At that time though there is just a egg and a sperm, the fetus is nowhere near fully developed and is a zygote. By contrast, while a mere collection of human cells may carry on the activities of cellular life, it will not exhibit coordinated interactions directed towards a higher level of organization. Thus, the scientific evidence is quite plain: at the moment of fusion of human sperm and egg, a new entity comes into existence which is distinctly human, alive, and an individual organism - a living, and fully human, being. Others may suggest "humanness" depends on something
One idea supported by the people or political party I generally oppose is that the women of the United States should not have the license to legal abortion, even in cases of rape or incest. Accordingly, this anti-abortion stance is customarily coupled with religious convictions. However, ordinary citizens and legislators should not be able to legally impose their religious views onto American women. I acknowledge the moral defense for the “pro-life” movement and the rights of the unborn child. However, women of the United States America have the right to be independent of religious and pious condemnation and to be unrestrained when choosing the services concerning their reproductive welfare. U.S. abortion laws ought not jeopardize the health
Thirdly, God’s stance on the significance of fetuses is very clear in Scripture. The Word reveals that a fetus is a person, no matter its week’s gestation. For example, Jeremiah 1:5a says, “before I formed you in the womb I knew you.” This clearly shows that God has a relationship with every embryo and in order for this to occur the unborn being must be alive. In closing, the Bible teaches the significance of every being, thus illuminating that even a young fetus has life and a relationship with the
The bible however, never really said that abortion was okay or not okay. In Genesis 2:7 it says, “God breathed into his nostrils the breath of life and man became a living soul,” this does not exactly explain The Lord’s opinion on abortion. Others believe life does begin at conception. “Jon Daugherty contends that all abortion is murder because life begins at conception, when the male sperm and the female egg combine.” (Viewpoints pg.27) If the baby was not considered “alive in the mother’s body” then why is it that when a pregnant woman gets murdered the court rules it a double homicide? Abortion is prohibited in the third trimester. Gregg Easterbrook writes that complex brain-wave activity is developed in the third trimester. The fetus’s heart starts to beat and it starts to kick in twenty weeks of pregnancy. In Europe abortions early on in the mother’s pregnancy, abortion is legal; however later in the pregnancy, abortion becomes less legal and less moral. (GreenHaven Press
This paper will explore the opinions of older and younger American adults regarding abortion. Abortion has long been a topic of strong debate and gray areas. There are many laws put into place stipulating aspects of the legality of abortion. It is often assumed that those of the younger generation identify as pro-choice, meaning they agree with the legality of abortion. On the other end of the spectrum, it is speculated that older adults lean more toward being pro-life, meaning they do not agree with the legality of abortion. I predict that older adults (40 years of age and older) will identify as pro-life more than younger adults (18-25). I will analyze previous research that has been done, as well as interpret surveys conducted by myself.
Abortion seems to be a major issue in the world today especially in the United States. With the political race for President just getting stated this issue will be on the forefront of many complains and debates. An article over abortion was published a few days ago and covers some troubling trends in state law that have been passed so far this year. States like Arizona and Arkansas have passed laws that further interfere in the doctor-patient relationships that surge mandatory delays for women seeing safe and legal abortion. Such laws are becoming more popular in parts of the Southern states that have impacted reproductive rights and banning abortion being covered by insurance. This issue is ethically relevant to what we have discussed earlier
Is abortion a defendable idea on moral grounds? Of the many moral issues that exist, abortion seems to be the most controversial and has sparked numerous debates in almost every sector of society. This crucial yet sensitive issue continues to negatively affect the lives of humans. According to Tom Head (2003), abortion is destroying the physical and spiritual body. “It is the intentional termination of a pregnancy after conception. It allows women to put an end to their pregnancies, and involves killing the undeveloped embryo or fetus”. At the moment of conception, the embryo or fetus becomes alive. This new life now, imposes on us a moral obligation to preserve it. Let us also examine the
The legal aspect of abortion began in 1972, when the President’s Commission on Population Growth and the American future proposed that the abortion policy should be loosened and contraceptives should be more available to teenagers as a way to limit unwanted pregnancies. However, Republican president Richard Nixon opposed it. On the other hand, Democratic candidate George McGovern argued that the states should be able to create and enforce their own abortion laws. This raises the question: should the federal government or the states be responsible for the abortion laws? Does the federal government have a right to tamper with laws that should be reserved to the states or does it have the right to protect the welfare of its citizens, born or unborn,
Abortion, by definition, is a practice of ending a pregnancy by using surgical methods to cause the death of a fetus. United States was one of the earliest nations to legalise abortion, by the court case of Roe verses Wade in 1973. Roe, a pregnant widow, challenged the State of Texas where the law stated Roe was not admitted to have an abortion. However, Roe won the court case against Texas and soon abortion became legalized in many states. Although many cases of abortions have been practiced before 1973, the controversy over whether abortion should be validated worldwide is actively appealed by people in America, as well as in other countries. Politicians characterise the controversy by government parties, mainly the liberals as pro-choice
At birth the fetus becomes human because it can now independently breathe, move, eat etc. Now a pro-life believer could now say, ‘Would a person who is living off a kidney dialysis machine, and cannot live independently not be a person’?’ To answer that is the key to why a fetus is not a person. As soon as one can live independently they can be considered to be a person, if after that they become dependent they still remain persons because they have already functioned independently and crossed the line from human organism to human.
The morality of abortion has been argued since humans have existed yet only in 1973 following the controversial “Roe V. Wade” case did abortion become legal in America, perhaps the most advanced and developed country in the
