The topic I will be talking about today is a topic always argued and politics use to try and win a presidential spot. Abortion is a very touchy subject to talk about just because of the fact that it has different views based of different people's opinions.

Medical abortions are given through a clinic, and have been performed safely and legally since 2000 in the United States. Aspiration abortion can be surgically performed using sterile instruments. It may be performed up to twelve weeks past the first day of the previous menstrual cycle. Both abortion options carry the minimum of ten times less risk of health complications than resuming the pregnancy (“Early Abortion Options”). Abortion should not be called murder, but rather just the termination of a woman’s pregnancy.

There are two different types of abortions. If in the first trimester the patient would likely have a vacuum aspiration. Vacuum or suction aspiration uses aspiration to remove uterine contents through the cervix. If a women is her second trimester meaning that it’s been more than 13 weeks since your last menstrual period, she will likely have a dilation and evacuation which involves removing the fetal and placental tissue with a combination of suction and instruments. According to the Merriam-Webster dictionary, an abortion is, “the termination of a pregnancy after followed by a death of the embryo or fetus as an expulsion of a human fetus during the first twelve weeks of gestation-miscarriage. There have been a lot of disagreements since Roe v Wade announced the method a fundamental right on January 22, 1973. The decision resulted in a battle between the people who supported the pro-life movement, who attempted to turn over the ruling, and the pro-choice supporters, who tried to prevent the decision from being weakened. The pro-choice group was certain that opposing a woman the right to choose whether or not to have an abortion was an inadmissible government violation of freedom and privacy. Women around age twenty to twenty-four years old are most likely to have an abortion done(Trupin).

There are many different ways to abort a baby. First, there are the early non-surgical methods which can be performed within the first 2-10 weeks of pregnancy. An example of this is mifepristone (RU-486). It ends the pregnancy by blocking the hormone progesterone. Without this hormone, the lining of the uterus breaks down, and the abortion is done. Then there is the vacuum aspiration which can be performed within the first 2-12 weeks of pregnancy and it involves the uterine contents being removed by suction (aspiration), which is applied through a cannula, which is a thin tube that is inserted into the uterus and connected to a source of suction, either an electric pump or a handheld syringe. Next, there is the dilation and Evacuation (D&E) which is performed within the first 13 to 21/22 weeks of gravidity. There are also many other ways for having an abortion. The sad thing is, many woman have bad side effects from abortion. A 2009 study released by the American Association for Cancer Research revealed that women who have had abortions have a 40 percent greater risk of getting breast cancer. The same study showed that the use of abortion drugs or pills by minors was linked to a 270 percent increased risk for triple-negative breast cancer, which is an extremely aggressive form of cancer associated with high mortality rates.
