Adam And Eve : The Garden Of Eden

The Book of Genesis derives from the First Testament of the Hebrew Bible and explains the story of creation, or how the world came to be. While the author isn’t proven, it is widely believed by many that Moses authored the first five books of the Bible, also known as the Torah. In the story, the timeframe isn’t specified expect that it is said to be ‘in the beginning’ of all creation. The story goes on to detail how God created the heavens, the earth, and all its creatures. On the sixth day, he created man, Adam, in his image and placed him in the Garden of Eden. From Adam’s rib, he created a woman, Eve. The Garden of Eden was a lush and plentiful garden; however they were forbidden by God to eat from the Tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil.

Dated back to the 10th century B.C., the story of Adam and Eve is told in Genesis chapters 2 and 3 of the Christian Bible. The creation is the main focus of chapter 2 and their fall and punishment is the main focus in chapter 3. God creates Adam in his image from mud, he blows to his face and gives him life. God presents all of the animals of the land to Adam and he is not satisfied, so God created Eve out of Adams rib as a companion and helper for him, and he is satisfied with Gods work. God commands Adam and Eve to not eat the fruit of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. But, the serpent persuades Eve to eat the forbidden fruit, and she persuades Adam to do so as well. After they eat the forbidden fruit they realize they are naked

The story of Adam and Eve is simple. God created man and gave him a wife and all the animals, along with the Garden of Eden. The only rule was that they could not eat the fruit from the tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil or the tree of Life (Genesis 2:8-3:24). Eve, tempted by evil, ate from the tree anyway and let her husband eat from it too.

In the beginning of Genesis everything is explicitly explain. On the sixth day, God decided to make humankind in his “own image”. He made Adam fashioned out of dust, and gave him the breath of life to animate him. God then opted to make an aide for man. He appropriated a rib from man and created a woman. Adam then named her Eve. God placed Adam and Eve, in the Garden of Eden, encouraging them to take pleasure in the world he had created, but forbidding them from taking anything from the tree of knowledge. Adam and Eve lived in blissful ignorance until the Satan disguised as a serpent got ahold of them promising infinite knowledge. Eve reminded the serpent that God told them to stay away from the tree

However, evil soon entered the garden in the form of a serpent. One day when Eve was walking in the garden she encountered the evil serpent who encouraged her to take a fruit from one of God’s forbidden fruit trees. The serpent succeeded in deceiving Eve to take a fruit; she then ate the fruit and shared it with Adam. Then God became angry with Adam and Eve for betraying Him. To punish Adam and Eve, he ejected them from the garden and subjecting them to mortality, painful childbirth, sin and shame.

However, the Lord felt that Adam needed a partner to suit him. This is when God took the rib from Adam and made the woman. Thus, Adam and Eve were the first humans created on the Earth. Little did they know that temptation would face them. Temptation would come through the Serpent and deceive Eve first. The serpent was very crafty in his language by questioning God. Eventually the serpent persuades Eve to eat the fruit to be knowledgeable of good and evil. Later, Adam is deceived by watching Eve eat from the forbidden tree. They both partake in eating what God has told them not to eat. God finds out that they have disobeyed him and creates hostility between the man and woman. Since Adam and Eve became knowledgable after eating the fruit, they realized their nakedness. Although God shows his anger towards Adam and Eve, he clothes them with garments of skins. Eve was created from one of Adam’s ribs. Hence, they were regarded as one flesh (Genesis 2:24 NIV). God created Adam and Eve to live and commune with Him, and take care of the Garden of Eden. Since they were created in the image of God, they, and all of humankind, are spirit beings like Him but have a human body. Unfortunately, Eve was deceived by Satan. She and Adam ate from the Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil after God forbid them to. This is how original sin entered the world. By disobeying God, humankind was separated from Him. Adam and Eve were banished from their perfect paradise that God had created for them. Since that day, sin has manifested itself in greed, hate, lust, anger, jealousy, and a host of other sins (Lecture 3. 2017). Humankind was sentenced to pain, suffering, toil, tears, and death. God’s purpose for humankind was to flourish. To worship and commune with Him. To take care of ourselves, but also to love and help one another. Most certainly all theologians and readers of the Bible interpret Genesis' story of the creation of Earth's first human couple, Adam and Eve, as one of comedy-turned-tragedy, being that their blissful lives were shattered when Satan tempted Eve with the promise of knowledge by eating the forbidden fruit of the Tree of Knowledge, the one tree in the garden that God designated as untouchable. However, Genesis does not fill-in the missing background information as to the reasons why man and woman came to be the first rational, mortal creations of God's divinity. The scale, although not specified, appears to be about a couple feet high and a couple feet long. The general subject matter is Adam and Eve in the garden of Eden. It seems to be before they have discovered the forbidden fruit. The figures seem to be embracing everything the garden has to offer, they seem content and comfortable in their own skin. In most paintings, Adam and Eve are covered up after eating the forbidden fruit, for they are shamed. In the beginning, God created the heavens and the Earth. After having created everything on Earth, He made man. “The Lord God said, ‘It is not good for the man to be alone. I will make a helper suitable for him.’”(NIV Genesis 2:15). Thus, He made Eve from the rib of Adam. God told Adam and Eve not to eat from the tree of knowledge but the evil serpent, who was craftier than them, tricked Eve into eating the fruit. Eve later convinced Adam after having argued with him and he gave in. Both were punished by God for having gone against His word and would suffer the consequences of it. “So the Lord God banished him from the Garden of Eden to work the ground from which he had been taken. In the beginning of Adam and Eve story, it is describing the way Eve was created from Adam; “the rib that the Lord God had taken from the man he made into a woman and brought her to the man.”(Genesis 2:22) Adam was the one who chose the name for Eve, Woman; this shows the dominion over her. In Genesis 2:24-25, God has created a connection between a man and a woman, which is resembled by sex between man and his wife; “and the man and his wife were both naked, and were not ashamed.” This unashamed nakedness of the man and the woman were reflected as uncivilized and innocent position.

Now at this point there may be a question as to whether anything that has been said up until this point has any purpose, but assuredly it does. Adam is often thought of, and not without good reason, as the type of Christ. Type being a sort of precursor or shadow of what was to come. So what we see in Adam in the Garden of Eden is not simply just a narrative but a very purposeful depiction of what Jesus was going to look like when He came to fulfill His Messianic mission. This means that whatever we see in Jesus we can see in Adam (short of sin of course) and whatever we see in Adam we can see in Jesus (again short of sin). What must be noted here is that Adam and Christ are not both viewed as being on the same level, but rather that Jesus is put far above Adam. This is seen clearly in Romans 5:15 where we see Adam, causing death for all men by his sin, and then how much more the gift of God (that being grace and life) is seen coming into the lives of men by one man’s obedience.
