3. Ended his career with exactly 3000 career hits, being only the tenth player ever to do that at the time
For many individuals baseball is just a sport, but for Jonathan Griffin it is a childhood dream to become a professional baseball player. The twenty-seven-year old Jonathan Griffin played for the University of Central Florida and moved his way up to the minor leagues. The prolific slugger played in various teams throughout his baseball career leading him to reach Double A. Griffin played exceptionally for the first few years of his career, however as he approached a rough patch, that stemmed from lack of motivation, he began to train which transformed him into a prolific player.
Instead of focusing on what hits count and what hits don't, let's focus on one of the greatest hitters in baseball history. Today, Miami Marlins outfielder Ichiro Suzuki collected his 4, 257th in his career against the San Diego Padres. Obviously, the Major League Baseball all-time hits king is Pete Rose (who has 4,256). Ichiro recorded 1,278 hits in his nine-season career in Japan with the Orix Blue Wave. With the Seattle Mariners, New York Yankees, and Marlins, he has collected 2,979 and counting. Here's an emotional Ichiro in the post-game press conference after today's game versus the Padres:
Alex Rodriguez is the third baseman for the New York Yankees. He has been playing for the Yankees since 2004, but has been playing professional baseball since 1994. Alex Rodriguez can be considered to be one of the greatest baseball players of Hispanic descent and has broken records previously set Sammy Sosa, who is also one of baseball's greatest players of Hispanic descent.
Yadier Molina who was born on July 13th in the year of 1982 is a Puerto Rican baseball player that has found his way to the MLB and has really made a mark on the game. ("Yadier Molina." Famous Birthdays. N.p., n.d. Web. 08 Mar. 2016.) Molina was born in Bayamon Puerto Rico and grew up with his father Benjamin Molina, his mother Gladys Matta Molina, and then his two brothers Bengie and Jose. Yadi’s father was a ameture catcher in Puerto Rico but also worked as a toolsman too. Baseball was in the family for a long time and that is all that him and his brothers knew growing up which would explain why they all three made a professional career out of it. Both his brothers Bengie and Jose ended up being major league catchers as well, but nothing like their brother Yadier. They all knew he had something special growing up and playing as a kid. Molina never really focused on the catching
The man, the myth, the legend… Mariano Rivera, the best closing pitcher who ever played the game of baseball. Most of you might recognize him by his many nicknames given to him due to his dominant performance throughout his career. He was referred to as “The Great One, The Sandman, The Hammer of God, and Mo.” (Bleacher Report) Clearly, he was thought very highly of in the game of baseball. Coming from nothing, Mariano has really made a name for himself here in the states. He was once a struggling boy, who became a thriving athlete and a man. It was in his heart to fight for what he desired, and not to stop until he got it. However, contrary to what you may be thinking, Rivera was not only a man who dedicated his life to baseball, but he also dedicated his life to being a
Hank Aaron, byname of Henry Louis Aaron, (born February 5, 1934, Mobile, Alabama, U.S.), American professional baseball player who, during 23 seasons in the major leagues (1954–76), surpassed batting records set by some of the greatest hitters in the game, including Babe Ruth, Ty Cobb, and Stan Musial.
Midre Cummings is one of the many MLB players from the Virgin Islands. He played out field and pinch hits. He has 22 career home runs. He has 286 career hits. He has 1113 career at bats. He also has 124 RBIs. He is 6-1 190lbs bats left and throws right. He was born October 14 1971. He is 46 and he doesn’t play any more. His last game was on August 6 2005 against the Texas Rangers. He won the World Series in 2001 against the Arizona Diamondbacks. He was a first round draft pick by the Minnesota Twins in the 1990s. He played for six different teams the Pittsburgh Pirates, Philadelphia Phillies, Boston Red Sox, Minnesota Twins, Arizona Diamondbacks, Tampa Bay Devil Rays, and the Baltimore Orioles.
Accomplishments: He broke ground for the participation of African Americans in professional sports. Hank Aaron broke Babe Ruth's career home run record, although he hit a respectable .280 with 13 home runs before breaking an ankle in September. In 1955, Aaron became the Braves' starting right fielder and he won the NL batting title in 1956 with a .328 average and 26 home runs. His all-time career mark of 755 home runs was built on a remarkable 20-season stretch from 1955 through 1974. He hit 40 or more home runs in 8 of those seasons, 30 or more in 15, and 20 or more in all 20. He also batted over .300 fourteen times. His top batting average was .355 in 1959; his best home run season was 1971, when he had 47. Fascinatingly, he hit 44 home runs--his uniform number--in three different seasons, 1957, 1963, and 1965. The Braves, who had moved to Atlanta in 1966, announced that he would be held out of the opening series in Cincinnati so he would have a chance to break the record before his home fans. However, Baseball Commissioner Bowie Kuhn ordered the team to use Aaron in Cincinnati, and he tied the record in his first trip to the plate. When he retired, he held all-time major-league records for extra base hits, 1,477; total bases, 6,856; and runs batted in, 2,297. Aaron then returned to Atlanta to work in the Braves' front office, where he became one of the first blacks in upper-level
‘I’d rather be a good person off the field than a good baseball player on the field.’ (Bryce Harper). Bryce Harper would rather help those in need than be a terrific baseball player. Bryce Harper would rather be known for helping those in need than his ability to play baseball. Bryce Harper gave a homeless woman a jar of money. Bryce Harper does help those in need, but wants to help more people. America's gift to Generation Z is baseball players who are role models; Matt Carpenter is caring and Bryce Harper is inspiring.
Baseball statistics are meant to be a representation of a player’s talent. Since baseball’s inception around the mid-19th century, statistics have been used to interpret the talent level of any given player, however, the statistics that have been traditionally used to define talent are often times misleading. At a fundamental level, baseball, like any game, is about winning. To win games, teams have to score runs; to score runs, players have to get on base any way they can. All the while, the pitcher and the defense are supposed to prevent runs from scoring. As simplistic as this view sounds, the statistics being used to evaluate individual players were extremely flawed. In an attempt to develop more
Athletes have been protesting in ways which are frowned upon by the government. Athletes should use their fame to promote a political agenda because everybody has an opinion. In the article, “The athlete as agent of change,” by Lonnie Bunch and David Skorton, athletes use their fame to promote a political agenda. In this article, Bunch and Skorton list the ways that athletes silently protest in sports. Ways that listed include athletes turning their back on the flag, kneeling during the national anthem, and refusing to salute the flag. These actions show that the athlete may be opposing America and by doing this, their opinion is shown. Athletes’ opinions are very powerful because athletes are often mentors or inspirations to their fans which
Credibility is something that takes a lot of time to gain, but can be lost in an instance. When someone or something is credible that means they are easily trusted or believed in because of what they have done in the past. For example Nike lost some credibility when new came out they were producing their products in sweatshops across the world. However since that they have worked on that problem and gained back their credibility, but it took some time. Credibility is a great quality to have, it means you are trustworthy and people respect you. Furthermore Alex Rodriguez is another example that shows why credibility is an important quality and how cheating affects it.
The Rangers have jumped all over the Houston Astros Monday evening, but Adrian Beltre has been on a level of his own this evening. For the third time of his career, Adrian Beltre has hit for the cycle.
Aside from Joe Crawford’s vibrant personality, his experiences as one of the best NBA referees in history speak profoundly on spirituality in sports. As a fan of his, I always viewed Crawford as a very tough-minded referee. He talked about officiating is never black and white. Even though there is a rulebook, it can never cover all the scenarios that happen in a real game situation. In a sense, this rule applies to real life as well. Most of the things in this world are not black and white situations. For example, nobody can say that he or she is better than another person in every aspect, no commercial products can truly be defined as the best, and God can never be defined one way or the other.
