Alexander the Great was the king of Macedonia and was a great conqueror in 330 BC. He was the son of King Philip II and Queen Olympia. During his childhood, he had an interest in courses like medicine, science, and philosophy. He was tutored by the philosopher, Aristotle, and was influenced by Homer’s Iliad, which made him a great conqueror after he was motivated by the main character in the epic, Achilles. After he was proclaimed as king, he led series of attacks and invasions with his army into Asia Minor in around 320 BC. Alexander lll of Macedonia commonly known as Alexander the Great, in recent times many had historians debating whether or not he was truly great. At the young age of 13 Alexander began learning from the famous Greek philosopher, Aristotle, and when he was 20 he inherited the empire from his father. This empire included the Kingdom of Macedonia and the city states of Greece at the time, but he soon began to expand it. Some think Alexander was great because he became so powerful, conquering so much land in a short amount of time, almost never losing a battle. Alexander was in fact great because he was an intelligent military leader, he showed equity and respect, and exhibited appreciation of and spread many cultures.

Alexander inherited Macedonia at age twenty, and he set out to conquer Persia immediately which was considered the most powerful kingdom in the world. Alexander was to born to be a king. He was taught by Aristotle training and excelling in politics, sports, and warfare. He even eventually grew such a high belief of himself that he considered himself to be a god. News spread of his great power intimidating many rulers resulting in some of them surrendering. From many years of fighting he sustained many injuries weaking hi health. He became ill while feasting and later died at age thirty three. Some people believed he may have died from Malaria but no one can ever be sure. One thing that will also remain a mystery is why Alexander did not name an heir to the throne. Therefor, his officers split up the land causing the kingdom to weaken and eventually fall. Alexander III of Macedon also known as, Alexander the Great, made a name for himself many years ago but today his “greatness” is being questioned because of research conducted due to modern technology. In order for someone to be viewed as great, they would need lots of evidence supporting that they were a well-rounded person. I believe that alexander had rightfully earned this title because through my research I have only found evidence that Alexander was indeed a man of greatness. Although Alexander displayed many characteristics of greatness there are three that have stood out me, his strategy, selflessness, and influence. These reasons show clear support that Alexander was Great and never anything less.

Alexander witnessed his father rule Macedonia as the king and having had one of the greatest philosophers at the time, Aristotle as his teacher it’s no surprise that Alexander from a very early age showed characteristics of a leader. When Alexander managed to tame the horse, Bucephalus his father pointed out even as a child his ambition is far too great, “My son, seek thee out a kingdom equal to thyself; Macedonia has not room for thee” (Plutarch 317). Alexander didn’t experience struggles or opposition when he rose to power, in fact he had inherited his position when his father was assassinated. However, there is no concrete evidence whether Alexander the great had anything to do with the death of his father.

When one begins to explore King Alexander and his amazing accomplishments, they must first examine his upbringing. Alexander was the son of King Philip II of Macedonia, who also achieved greatness, and ascended to the thrown at twenty-one years old. Alexander was provided by his father, a remarkable foundation, which included the best education, not only focusing on academics, but philosophy and military maneuvers as well.
