Jack as an Allusion to Hitler A dictator is a ruler with total power over a country, typically one who has obtained power by force. One of the most popular cases of dictatorship was Adolf Hitler, a German politician, who eventually gained control of multiple countries. In the text, Lord of The Flies, one of the main characters, Jack, is a horrific, cruel little boy who shows traits to that of Hitler. Many comparisons of the two can be made in the book, such as how they gained their power of their groups, why and how they have such power, and their mission, once their group had assembled. To start off, both Hitler and Jack were average innocent little boys, who eventually found themselves to leadership. Hitler was introduced to power …show more content…
The power Jack has is so strong in violence and anger, and Jack is proud of it. In Chapter 11, Jack gloats, “See? They do what I want” (Golding 179) when talking to his ex-leader Ralph referring to his tribe members. This quote show similarity to that of Hitler with his soldiers because Hitler never actually killed anyone, his soldiers did all of the work. Lastly, the most resembling trait between Jack and Hitler are between their strong aspiration to kill off the remaining tribe, or race, in Hitler’s approach. Jack has a strong hatred for Ralph’s tribe mainly because they do not want to join Jack’s tribe. Jack eventually captures or kills everyone in Ralph’s tribe beside Ralph with no remorse. In Chapter 5, before Jack starts his own tribe, he tells a few little kids, “Serve you right if something did get you, you useless lot of cry-babies!” (Golding 83 ). This quote shows that Jack has no sympathy, even to little kids who don't know much of anything, and some may even become members of the future tribe. These traits show scary similarities with that of Hitler when he killed the innocent Jews simply because they weren't like him, and showed signs of no remorse as he did it for a couple of years. In conclusion, when Jack finds his way to power, controls his tribe with fear and intimidation, and nearly kills off Ralph's tribe through survival of the fittest, these points all clearly relate to some of of that of Hitler. Although Jack and Hitler do share some
Jack is a little rebellious in the beginning when he is not elected leader. The first example of violence is when Jack kills his very first pig. Throughout the novel, Jack forms a tribe, that dances, and paints their face in order to hide from civilization. Each time the tribe chants and dances they become increasingly violent, first beating Robert then killing Simon. The most violent thing Jack and his tribe do is capture Samneric, torture them into revealing Ralph’s hiding spot, and then Jack hunts to kill Ralph.
The power-hungry will often feel the need for absolute control, hardly ever getting what they desire, they will often be portrayed as crazy and vicious. The same can be said for Jack; all he wants is to be the leader and make the decisions, but Ralph is the one in control. Jack’s desire for power is ruining his own image, and the well being of the other boys. Without the supervision of adults his morals and values took a turn for the worst.
Jack is only interested in power, he acts like a dictator and doesn’t follow the communities thoughts. Some actions that Jack takes that shows this are "I got the conch," said Piggy indignantly. “You let me speak!” “The conch doesn’t count on top of the mountain," said Jack, “So you shut up.” This shows how Jack acts like dictator because he doesn’t listen to what the people say. “He's not a hunter. He'd never have got us meat. He isn't a perfect and we don't know anything about him. He just gives orders and expects people to obey for nothing. All this talk-.” This shows how Jack is power hungry and will basically do anything to get it, he is trying to make Ralph look like a bad chief in order for him to try to take the power away from him and get it for himself. “We’ll raid them and take fire. There must be four of you; Henry and you, Robert and Maurice. We'll put on paint and sneak up.” This shows how Jack uses his power to make his tribe members listen to his orders and steal the members of the other tribes. Jack is only interested in power and wants the power for his own
This quote shows how the importance of dictatorial power in a “savage” society. Power is the most important thing when there are no boundaries to society.
Hitler killed anyone he did not like or agree with. He did this with zero remorse about his actions. Like Hitler, Jack would kill anyone he didn't agree with or like. Jack did not even realize what he was doing to people who used to call his friends. His tribe killed simon thinking he was some kind of beast. His tribe also attempted to hunt Ralph down and kill him all because he didn't agree with Jack's rules. An example of Jack killing with no remorse is when he Kills piggy and proceeds to say “See? See? Thats what youll get!”(Golding 181). Obviously one cannot compare Hitler's body count to Jacks but they both were horrible humans who killed just because they didn't like someone or one did not agree with them. One thing different about the two is Jack is killing for a god like figure. Jack was killing for the Lord of the Flies. Hitler was killing to try to gain world domination.
Even though Jack demonstrated his leadership qualities when proposing a rescue plan to the ‘tribe’, and by accepting Ralph’s election to lead the group, something he wanted for himself, he eventually turns into a savage through killing a pig. This incident gives him a sense of power realizing that he can act with impunity without consequences. Wanting to hunt and kill pigs turned into a priority, eliminating the need to be
In our society we have our system for power set up making the understanding of who is in charge easy; However, when the boys are stranded on an island they are forced to come up with their own system, causing rivalries and corrupting rights and values. Before being stranded on an island Jack was an innocent, well-behaved child, however, when thrown into a foreign place with no society and no system of power it is very easy to destroy all of your innocence when obtaining most power. Jack was a hunter and was in charge of all the hunter, he eventually made his own tribe and almost everyone followed him, giving him a mass amount of control. Golding shows that Jack uses his power in ways only beneficial to him, easily seen when the remainder of Ralphs tribe approach Jacks and see him, “ painted up and wearing garland around his neck” (54). Jack uses his power to idolize himself and make the other
Throughout history, there have been many different types of leaders. During World War II Adolf Hitler and Benito Mussolini were dictators over Germany and Italy. The pair had a bellicose attitude who dominated over their nation, and the land they conquered. Jack parallels the two leaders with his leadership style. He rules with complete, and unquestioned power over the boys in his tribe. Even while he beats one of his followers for no known reason, not a single boy asked any questions about if it is right; or if they should still be in his tribe. Jack continuously manipulates the boys in his tribe to stay in control. After the murder of Simon, he tells them it wasn’t Simon, but instead it was the beast in disguise. He also tells them they
Jack was a very power hungry young boy. Although he doesn't have any power at the beginning of the novel, he took every opportunity to take the position of chief and was eventually successful. Jack's dictatorial style of leadership contrasted very directly with the more democratic and passive style of Ralph. Jack ruled with an iron fist, allowing no one to question him or his leadership. Jack represented the wanting for a single, all-powerful leader to guide the followers of society using any means he feels necessary.
Jack Merridew is presented as the indifferent, older character of the novel. He is the antagonist and could be seen as a devil figure in the story. Jack is the hunter, the dictator and, throughout the story, is at constant battle with Ralph for his leadership. Jack wants to be in control of the island and the kids but the type of leadership that he offers is brutal and similar to that of a dictatorship and communism. Jack also believes that the group should have fun and stuff oneself with the food they hunt. He is not very concerned with the future of being rescued. On the other hand, Ralph wants order and work and is much more concern with being rescued.
Starting off with Adolf Hitler, though he never physically appears in the story, but he stands as a symbol for all the evil caused by the Nazis and the war. Hitler's use of language and propaganda has caused suffering which shows an abuse of the power of words, and his book “Mein Kampf” plays a major role in the plot. Max addresses,”Mein Kampf. Of all the things to save him”(160). Hitler’s book gives the impression to people that Max is embracing Hitler’s teaching, the mockery that such a book that is a punch to the
To begin with Jack, Jack wants power and leadership. The situation Jack is in makes his evil grow. Jack is letting the situation control him which is increasing the evil inside of him. The evil inside him is making him more selfish and violent. For example, at the starting of the novel when Jack had failed to kill the pig he cries to Ralph, “[Jack] tried to convey the compulsion to track down and kill that was swallowing him up. ‘I went on. I thought, by myself-’ The madness came into his eyes again. ‘I thought I might kill.” (Golding 51). The quote shows how at the starting of the novel Jack had good inside of him as he had feared killing an animal which makes sense as he is a kid. This shows that Jack was not evil from the beginning. But the situation and atmosphere increase the evil inside of him when he says, “I thought I might kill” this shows how the
The character that refutes the quotation“I am not interested in power for power’s sake, but I’m interested in power that is moral, that is right and that is good”(Martin Luther King Jr) Is Jack because he is someone that represents savagery and would do anything to get what he wants. He is a ruthless killer who is overruled by the idea of violence and makes mistakes which harms the group of boys. He wants power because he has always had it and once he knew he wouldn't be the one in charge this time he bribed some of the boys with things they wanted like hunting, food, and fun and lead them on their own journey without Ralph as chief. For example,” I gave you food, said Jack, and my hunters will protect you from the beast. Who will join my tribe?
Jack had traits like all of these terrifying men. He used brute force and fear tactics just as Hitler did. But, before Jack obtained power he did various acts that portray with Adolf did. He gained trust with the leader and was able to almost slide rules past Ralph for his one sake. Hitler
Once these boys join Jack’s tribe, they are forced to follow his orders, committing heinous atrocities against their former friends in a desperate attempt to avoid the physical punishment Jack inflicts on those who disobey him. Jack rules his subjects through fear and intimidation, and yet lures them in by playing on hidden desires unbeknownst to them. Jack is often shown acting cruel and menacing towards the other boys, however is he also shown as being self-conscious and a bit insecure: “Boys are desperate to distract from their own helplessness and do so by projecting their fear of subjection onto an even weaker
