We all have faced a moment or a time where someone had made us happy or sad. And there is this Quote written by Mary Angelou “I’ve learned that people will forget what you said, or what you did, but people will never forget how you made them fell.” I have to say that this is really true. And how many people have ran thoughts about someone and how they made them feel a million times. I say that because I do, and sometimes I actually thought or think what they did and said was true. Because of that I think it was my fault. How many people do this, and how many people actually believe it, more that there should be. In the story “Thank You ma’am” both roger and Mrs. Jones both experience a feeling. With roger he gets shown what
Just the slightest bit of care and compassion can change a persons whole persona. This is what happens in Langston Hughes short story “Thank You, Ma’am,” when the old Mrs. Jones catches Roger trying to steal her purse. When Mrs. Jones gets ahold of Roger, he asks her if she’s going to take him to jail in which she replies “Not with that face, I would not take you nowhere.” This is the first important theme in the story, sympathy. Later in the story she takes Roger back to her house and she leaves the door open. Figuring that she did this on purpose, Roger decides not to run out the door. This is the second important theme in the story, trust. The themes of sympathy and trust were expressed throughout Hughes story in many ways, and I’m here to talk about them.
There are some challenges of human interactions in Thank You M’am, such as trust issues. “The boy said ‘I didn’t aim to.’” “She said ‘You a lie!’” Hughes shows that Roger is scared of Mrs. Luella Bates Washington Jones so he decided to lie to her, but Mrs. Jones doesn’t believe him. Trust issues can lead to challenges in human interactions because you should be able to depend on someone without thinking twice. The characters’ interactions change as the story progresses because they start caring for one another and they begin to trust one another. The author proves this by stating that in paragraph 24, “Roger looked at the door then at Mrs. Jones, then at the door, and finally, he went to the sink.” Roger is beginning to trust Mrs. Luella Bates Washington Jones because in the beginning of the story he would have ran based off of his reaction when Mrs. Jones picked him up. Also, Mrs. Jones is becoming more considerate towards Roger after she starts realizing that he might not have the best home environment. In the story, Mrs. Jones told Roger to go wash his face then she made him dinner. In the beginning, she was hitting and shaking Roger and now she is caring for him and sharing stories with him. These changes allow the characters to be more considerate and caring. For instance, Mrs. Jones gave Roger ten dollars to help him pay for a new pair of blue suede shoes.
In the story Thank you ma’am a boy named Roger tried to steal a lady named Mrs. Jones’ pocketbook. The lady took Roger back to her house and was holding him by the ear so he wouldn’t get away. Later on she let Roger wash off his face and gave him food. The reason he wanted to steal her pocketbook was to get some blue suede shoes. The lady tells Roger that she has done bad things in the pass too. Later on the lady gives Roger some money so that he could get the shoes.
At the beginning of “Thank you, Ma’am,” we see how just how compassionate Mrs. Jones really is. The moment she meets Roger, she tells the boy to wash his face. “Least I can do is wash your face. Are you hungry?” This might not seem like a very compassionate thing to do at first, however, she doesn’t even know the boy, yet she has enough compassion to make sure he is clean. Then, she takes the boy inside of her house! In addition, the boy, Roger asks, “You going to take me to jail?” But Mrs. Jones doesn’t. Maybe she sees that Roger is really a good boy inside, so she shows compassion to bring out his true kindness. This makes me think that he was probably trying to steal because he had to. And when Mrs. Jones asked him if he had anyone at home, he said, “No’m.” Mrs.
In the story Thank You, M’am by Langston Hughes Mrs.Jones treated Roger very generously because she didn't put him in jail, she gave him $10, and she gave him some hot cocoa and ham. In paragraph 27 and 28 the author writes, “You gonna take me to jail?” Asked the boy, bending over the sink. “Not with that face, I could not take your nowhere.” This quote supports the claim because not taking him to jail, this means she gave him a chance. This means she generous, but if she did take to jail this means she does not give anyone another chance most likely. Another piece of evidence is on paragraph 42 the author writes, “ She heated up some Lima beans and ham she had in the icebox, made some cocoa, and set the table. The women did not ask the boy
In this story of a woman named Mrs.Jones walked down the street and when she pasted Roger. Roger is a young boy who followed Mrs.Jones. When she turned that corner roger started to run behind and tried the snatch her purse. But the boy’s weight and the weight of the purse. After Mrs. Jones said “Pick up my pocketbook a boy and give it here”. Mrs. Jones still held Roger’s shirt. Then she said “you must be ashamed of yourself boy”. Mrs. Jones put her arms around Roger’s head to take him home and she wanted Roger to be her son. Mrs. Jones said “Roger your face is dirty”. Ain’t you got anybody at home to tell you to wash your face? Mrs. Jones said “your face going to get wash this evening.
In the story ”Thank You, M’am” Mrs. Jones did not live the life she had hoped for as a child, because of her troubled past she wants to show Roger a better life. Mrs. Jones is a lonely woman who needs someone to help and show kindness to. She does that in the story by taking Roger to her apartment instead of calling the cops she takes matter into her own hands. A flaw that Mrs. Jones shares with us in the story is trusting too easily. She leaves her purse and the front door open giving Roger the opportunity to escape with her money. Mrs. Jones has little money but from Roger's perspective she is a wealthy woman. Roger feels this way because he does not have a family. In the end, everybody wins because Roger gets his blue suede
In “Thank You, Ma’am.”, Mrs. Jones treated Roger as if he had never tried to steal her purse. He was a boy with a broken home and a troubled heart. Mrs. Jones treated the young and reckless boy as if he were her son. She fed him and even trusted him enough to leave her purse with Roger while she cooked for the two of them. Roger will never forget such a kind hearted woman.
In Langston Hughes’s, “Thank You, Ma’am,” there are two characters, Roger and Mrs. Luella Bates Washington Jones. Mrs. Luella Jones is a large woman with a large purse that had everything in it (Hughes 1). Roger is a young, immature fourteen-year-old boy that tries to steal Mrs. Luella’s purse from her side. Roger falls to the ground, and then Mrs. Luella picks him up and asks him why he is so dirty. After she tells Roger to pick up her pocket book, she drags him down the street and takes him into her house where she lets him wash his face and cooks him a meal.
The first cause of a significant change in the story Thank You Ma’am is when Roger was kicked in his blue-jeaned-sitter by Miss Jones. Also when he sat away from Miss Jones’s purse so he can be trusted. Lastly Miss Jones gave Roger the money to buy his blue Suede shoes he wanted to say thank you but he felt that thank you wasn’t enough to
In the short story "Thank You Ma'am" by Langston Hughes readers first think that the little boy Roger is a thief, but he most definitely does not stay one. Mrs. Luella Bates Washington Jones changes little Roger for the better. To start, in the beginning of the story Roger has no money. He is broke and has no family what so ever. So the fact that Mrs. Jones is bringing him into her own home and feeding him, washing him, and giving him money should mean a lot for Roger. To start, in the beginning of the story Roger needs money. He is poor and has no family. So instead of asking Mrs. Jones, he attempts to rob her on the corner of the street at 11pm and tries to take her purse. In the end he does not succeed. By the end of the short story, Roger knows right from wrong since Mrs. Jones gave him a tough lesson on how to behave in life. He doesn't try to escape from her when he has the chance, he actually makes sure Mrs. Jones trust him. He is also very polite to the woman and could not stop saying thank you for the food, money, and for washing his face.

She takes him back to her place and feeds him, and gives him 10 dollars. Then he leaves the house and goes to buy the shoes. The theme of “Thank You, Ma’am” by Langston Hughes is how you should give someone another chance so you see if they are trustworthy as shown how he(Roger) had a chance to run or stay in the house, and how he was so close by the purse and a place where Mrs. Jones can see him just in case he did grab the purse.
You and your grandma are taking a walk on some paths and are enjoying every bit of it. You hear some footsteps behind you and you expect it to be just somebody running and they are going to pass you. You’re looking the other way and don’t notice that your grandma had fallen. You finally look the other way and your grandma is gone. You look behind you cannot find anyone in sight. Later that month you find out that it was the man that was “running” behind you that day. In Thank you ma’am, the author, Langston Hughes, a short story about respect, shows that Mrs. Luella Bates Washington Jones experienced kind of the same thing with Roger. Roger wanted to steal some suede shoes from Mrs. Luella Bates Washington Jones but in the end, she gave him
