Amontillado Fortunato's Downfall

“The Cask of Amontillado” by Edgar Allan Poe, is a first person point of view short story with Montresor being the narrator. Fortunato insults Montresor which causes him to feel disgraced and plan to kill him. Knowing that, Montresor convinces Fortunato to the catacombs where he is chained him up and left to die. In “The Cask of Amontillado,” Fortunato’s arrogance and ignorance serve as a catalyst for his own foolish behavior, which fuels Montresor’s anger and immoral thirst for revenge. Fortunato’s arrogance not only blinds him to the dangers ahead, but also suggests he is unaware that he might have impugned another man’s honor. As Fortunato is ill he continues by saying,”the cough is a mere nothing; it will not kill me. I shall not die of a cough.” Which might become Fortunato's downfall(Poe 1110). This statement is irony as he doesn't die to his cough but his dear friend Montresor. Montresor toasts to a long life for Fortunato by saying,”And I to your long life.”(1111). Fortunato ignorance will be his undoing as he will drink causing him to be a easier target for Montresor. Fortunato self confidence will cause him to die to Montresor as he believes he is friends with him. …show more content…

In a religious aspect,”Montresor executes god’s wrath on Fortunato.”by killing him in the catacombs(Stott 87). By what Fortunato says and does he was destiny to meet his fate in the catacombs to Montresor. Montresor says,”he ventured upon insult, I vowed revenge.”and by saying this Fortunato’s fate was sealed(Poe 1108). With just an insult that may or may not be true, Montresor is willing to kill to protect his pride. Montresor will kill Fortunato but not be caught due to his intelligence and the setting he is doing it
