Maya Angelou, originally born as Marguerite Johnson, was an award winning poet, author and civil rights activist. She was born on April 4, 1928 in St. Louis, Missouri. She had a rough childhood as her parents split up when she was young, after which Maya Angelou, then Marguerite Johnson and her brother, Bailey, were sent to live with their grandmother in rural Stamps, Arkansas. She married two men, Tosh Angelos and Paul Du Feu, but eventually had divorces with both of those men. She was raped when she was 8 years old by her mother’s boyfriend after he suddenly showed up to visit. Her uncles found out about this event and beat her mother’s boyfriend to death.
