Ambrose Bierce’s “An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge” could seem like nothing more than a timeless tragedy. Peyton Farquhar is in the process of being hanged, but gets free and somehow escapes. Although he has escaped in his mind, by the end of the story he is gently swinging from side to side with the rope around his neck. Peyton is dealing with conflict between what he thinks is real and what is actually real. It is often difficult to see the difference between reality and imagination in life. “An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge” expresses the idea that deciphering between reality and imagination can be complicated through the use of plot structure, irony, and symbolism. There are many symbols such as colors and the way things are described. The color gray is found all around Farquhar, and as he is being shot at “he observed that it was a gray eye and remembered having read that gray eyes were keenest, and that all famous marksmen had them” (91). Grey represents Farquhar’s clouded sense of what is real and what is not real. The Federal scout who tricks Farquhar into thinking he is a Confederate soldier is also wearing grey. The ticking of his watch is also symbolic. While Farquhar is standing on the bridge he hears the ticking of his watch and “the intervals of silence grew progressively longer; the delays become maddening” (89). In his mind time has slowed, so he is able to see himself escaping for a long period of time; in reality time is moving at the same speed. In conclusion, “An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge” expresses the conflict between reality and imagination by the use of plot structure, irony, and symbolism. Throughout the story the reader as well as Farquhar finds it difficult to sort out thoughts from actuality. This is significant to the world today because often peoples’ minds tend to believe what is not real because it is easier than living in reality.
