Animal Farm is a story written by George Oswell and is an amusing but heartbreaking mockery on the dominance of Soviet communism and the Russian revolution in the form of a fairy tale featuring animals who can talk, walk and live amongst each other trying to survive day to day struggles of life on the farm in which the animals live. The setting of the story takes place in England in a field where the close knit group of animal’s rebel against their owner Mr. Jones and forge an extraordinary attack against Manor Farm which they rename to “Animal Farm”, they go on to destroy everything that reminded them of Mr. Jones but sadly their hopes of bringing betterment to their lives, egalitarianism will soon be thwarted as a pig designated as the …show more content…
Napoleon concocts a plan to get rid of Snowball so that only he would be in charge of the farm allowing him full control over the animals, he first makes everyone believe that Snowball stole the idea of building a windmill from Napoleon when in fact it was Snowball’s idea. Later in the fall, Jones and his men return to Animal Farm and attempt to retake it. Thanks to the tactics of Snowball, the animals defeat Jones in what thereafter becomes known as The Battle of the Cowshed. Winter arrives, and Mollie, a vain horse concerned only with ribbons and sugar, is lured off the farm by another human. Snowball begins drawing plans for a windmill, which will provide electricity and thereby give the animals more leisure time, but Napoleon vehemently opposes such a plan on the grounds that building the windmill will allow them less time for producing food. On the Sunday that the pigs offer the windmill to the animals for a vote, Napoleon summons a pack of ferocious dogs, who chase Snowball off the farm forever. Napoleon announces that there will be no further debates; he also tells them that the windmill will be built after all and lies that it was his own idea, stolen by Snowball. For the rest of the novel, Napoleon uses Snowball as a scapegoat on whom he blames all of the animals ' hardships. Napoleon 's lust for power increases to the point where he becomes a totalitarian dictator, forcing "confessions" from innocent animals and having
Shortly after the Revolution, Snowball comes up with the plan to construct a windmill to make the lives of the inhabitants of Animal Farm easier. Napoleon hides in the shadows per se until the puppies that he has taken and trained are old enough to act as a police force. Once they are old enough, Napoleon has the dogs drive Snowball off the farm. He then takes credit for the idea of the windmill and proceeds to claim that he, not Snowball, won the award at the Battle of Cowshed. Napoleon then informs the animals that Snowball was an enemy and was a threat to Animal Farm. The animals are swayed by his propaganda and are fearful of his police dogs; this is what keeps him in power.
Napoleon was so eager to keep his power that he used scapegoats for anything that went wrong on the farm. When the windmill that all the animals had been building collapsed, Napoleon did not want faith in him to be lost and replaced with rebellious thoughts. Napoleon relieved himself of any blame for the bad construction plans of the windmill by naming Snowball, who unbeknownst to the other animals had been killed, as the person responsible for its collapse. He told them that Snowball was a traitor and that anyone found to be in league with him would be punished.
Stated in the text is, “‘Do you know the enemy who has come in the night and overthrown our windmill? SNOWBALL!’” (Orwell 28) Another quote that is found in the text is, “‘No more delay…There is work to be done…We will teach this miserable traitor that he cannot undo our work so easily.’” (Orwell 28) This instance of that character role motivating and uniting the animals is when after working very hard, the animals had built about half of the first attempted windmill. On a particularly turbulent night, during a bout of raging winds, the structure was destroyed. Immediately upon the discovery of the ruins, Napoleon says those quotes to the animals in an attempt to rally them back to work and unite them against an outside force. His actions prove to be successful. Blaming Snowball for the destruction of the animals’ masterpiece created a feeling of vengeance inside them and inspired them to come together and persevere through rebuilding the windmill to spite their evil pig
Snowball is eventually forced out of the farm when Napoleon uses his guard dogs to attack Snowball. After that, he is blamed for issues of the farm, and it is claimed that he was in support of Mr. Jones at the beginning. Even though he fought for Mr. Jones and the shorts offends are distorted to wounds Napoleon perpetrated on him, those faulted of associating him are achieved after being required to profess, or declare, and a compensation is proposed for his capture.
Napoleon and Snowball were both in charge of the farm with equal leadership until Napoleon started to dislike Snowball’s ideas. Snowball was more of an idealist than Napoleon, wanting to spread the Rebellion to neighbouring farms where as Napoleon wanted to consolodate on his power. Snowball was more likeable and charasmatic than Napoleon and Napoleon saw that as a threat so Napoleon exiled Snowball out of the farm with his army of dogs. The naive animals were confused by this because they all personally liked Snowball. In the Battle of the Cowshed he had got injured to help them and was rewarded by Napoleon himself, a badge. Napoleon quickly got Squealer to settle the confusion and tell them that it was all an act. Squealer says, “Suppose you had decided to follow Snowball, with his moonshine and windmills - Snowball, who, as we now know, is no better than a criminal!” He follows that up with his rhetorical question of, “Surely comrades, you do not want Jones back do you? The animals have no answer back to this as they did not want him back, they just believe him and forget about
Napoleon and Snowball were in an argument about the creation of a windmill. Napoleon, who was about to lose, made a strange sound which cast out nine ferocious dogs into the barn, rapidly approaching Snowball. With no other choice, Snowball “slipped through a hole in the hedge and was seen no more”(V.XXIII). The other animals were petrified and would do anything Napoleon commanded to do in order to keep their life. Daily living at the farm is constantly getting more out of control. Napoleon starts killing more animals, even for money. Boxer was placed in a carriage which supposedly was taking him to the veterinarian but the side read " 'Alfred Simmonds, Horse Slaughterer and Glue Boiler, Willingdon. Dealer in Hides and Bone-Meal. Kennels Supplied.'
Holding all of the power on the farm, Napoleon makes all of the decisions on the farm for all of the animals without consent. He holds the animals to his word, without them truly noticing possible danger or change. Napoleon takes advantage of his power to make the animals perform certain tasks and major projects. “ ‘ No more delays, comrades!’ cried Napoleon when the footprints had been examined. ‘There is work to be done. This very morning we begin rebuilding the windmill, and we will build all through the winter, rain or shine’ ”(48). Instead of admitting to the storm destroying the windmill, he throws Snowball under the bus, to alter the animals’ train of thought so they would once again begin building the windmill. Having such great power,
Snowball established himself in charge and things were going smoothly. But Napoleon took over. Over time things on the farm became worse and worse. The Animal farm was starting to fail. It was going to fail from the start because of the pigs treating the other animals unfairly, Napoleon taking over then changing the farm, and the unsuccessful harvest.
Snowball was once a leader of animal farm with big ideas such as building a windmill. He had comrades and friends and luxuries such as milk and apples. After his conflict at the end of his relationship with Napoleon he was negatively affected as he was expelled from Animal Farm. He lost his leadership and power, his friends, his luxuries and his ability to create things such as the windmill plans as he had lost the need to do so. Snowball once had the ability to persuade the animals to build his windmill” Electricity could operate threshing-machines, ploughs, harrows, rollers and reapers and binders, besides supplying every stall with its own electric light, hot and cold water and an electric heater”. This shows how Snowball had courageous ideas to help Animal Farm and how that his relationship with Napoleon hindered these ideas to the extent of it being lost completely when he was expelled. This shows how conflict usually negatively effects one party, and positively the other, in a
Much of the following year is spent building the windmill. Jones forsakes the farm and moves to another part of the country. In contrary to the principles of Animalism, Napoleon hires a solicitor and begins trading with neighboring farms. When a storm makes the half-finished windmill collapse, Napoleon blames Snowball and orders the animals to rebuild
The windmill is first brought to everyone's attention by Snowball who researches on how to build one and draws out the plans. While this occurs, Napoleon slowly takes full control and dictatorship over the farm by eliminating Snowball. He does this by convincing all the animals that the windmill is a poor idea and eventually, Napoleon's dogs scare Snowball away. After Snowball vanishes, Napoleon confesses that the windmill is his idea and Snowball is a corrupt animal that should be disposed. "Napoleon had never been opposed to the windmill on the contrary, it was he who had advocated it in the beginning," said Squealer.
In my 3-D representation I chose to recreate the scene in the book when the first windmill was destroyed. In this scene, the windmill was knocked over by a bad storm. Napoleon knew what had happened to the windmill, but he decided to use this as an opportunity to order Snowball’s death. After the windmill was knocked down, Napoleon told all of the animals that it was Snowball who did this. Napoleon ordered the animals to search for him and then kill him.
In reality, the plans for the windmill were Snowball’s. Everyone was astonished at the plans except Napoleon. He argued against the plans every time. Snowball had formed the plans from books that used to be Jone’s. Enclosing himself in an old shed, he drew up the plans for the windmill on the floor. The false light that was cast, however, had Napoleon as he one who came up with the plans. He told everyone that he was for the plans all along and that Snowball had stole them from him. By using revisionist history, Napoleon was able to have all the animals think that he could come up with great ideas, allowing them to think he cared about the other
Later, Mr. Jones comes back and tries to reclaim the farm, only to be defeated again in the Battle of the Cowshed. With a renewed confidence, Snowball and Napoleon begin to argue more and more. It is clear now that they are both struggling to be the dominant pig on the farm. Snowball creates the idea of building a windmill that will harness electricity, but Napoleon disagrees. They hold a meeting to let everyone hear their sides and make a final decision. After Snowball gives a strong speech, Napoleon swiftly gives his argument and calls the dogs he took earlier. The dogs he was supposed to educate were really being trained as attack dogs. They chased Snowball off the farm, and left Napoleon in charge.
Snowball is willing to work side by side with the other animals in order to improve the farm and life in general. Napoleon on the other hand, has important ‘mental work’ that does not require hard labor to complete. While Snowball is still on the farm he attempts to educate himself by reading books. Once Napoleon has full power, he does the opposite of this. He begins to throw parties at the house, sleep much later than the rest of the animals, and drink. He does not make any attempt to better himself. Another instance where Snowball and Napoleon’s differences are showcased, is during the battle of the cowshed. Snowball takes the time to plan for himself a battle strategy and then instructs the animals what to do. He is also willing to be right in the middle of the action and charging forward at the front of the line, to the point of risking his life and being injured. Napoleon on the other hand is not mentioned during this battle. Snowball was willing to put in the hard work and effort to win the favor of the animals, and it was working, until Napoleon had him chased off of the farm. Napoleon did not want to have to work very hard for the admiration of the rest of the animals so he simply got rid of the
