Dystopia is common theme which dates hundreds of years in literature worldwide. Dystopian novels and short stories often depict a society repressed by a totalitarian government which comes to power after a cataclysmic occurrence, wielding unforgiving power and control over inhabitants for their own good. These dystopias are often perceived by the average citizen as a normal or unavoidable way of life, sometimes even a better way of life, yet there is often a single person or group of protagonists who question the justification of such living arrangements and threaten upheaval of the utopia sold by the ruling class.

The trend in dystopian societies is very intriguing and so vivid. Dystopian societies dictate many characteristics as leaders and followers usually one coming out from the shade to lead their small groups to rebel against order. A dystopian society is an illusion of a perfect society. Think of a world where having fun isn’t allowed. Nothing that has been created is fun no sports, no computer games, no music and everything in life has a purpose. You are forced to work for the rest of your life a job that the government chose. The government chooses who you are going to marry, where you are going to live and how much you are going to make. However, one person is assigned a job that he enjoyed and is fun. It is so fun that he become the best in the field. He then goes on to become the boss of everybody in that field and starts to boss around the people at the firm. If somebody says something that he does not agree with they get fired. The keys aspect of a dystopian society can either be a control of information, a singularity in power or ruling in fear and the purpose of these stories to the reader is what would happen if we let it run its course?

The big conflict is that the Allegiant are uprising against Evelyn and the Factionless. The Bureau is in charge of the city, but the citizens do not know that they exist. To stop everyone from killing themselves, the Bureau decides to reset everyone's memories with the memory serum. Tobias joins an uprising against the Bureau. After the uprising, he realized that they were trying to find the death serum. Tobias felt bad for taking part in the rebellion and Tris was on the verge of breaking up with him. Then, Tris forms her own group and plans to save the city from the memory serum. One problem is that in order to save the city, Caleb has to die because of the death serum. Tobias and the others were trying to settle the dispute between his mother, Evelyn, and his father, Marcus. Instead of Caleb dying, Tris sacrifices herself and Tobias made peace in the city, with the consequence of Tris

Dystopian societies starkly resemble our own. They emphasize the idea that if preventive measures are not taken now, there will be turmoil later. They serve as a reminder that if the weakness and passions of man are pursued, disorder will be fostered.

First, a dystopian society is characterized by, among other things: the use of propaganda to control citizens, the restriction of information and independent thought, the constant surveillance of citizens, and the worshipping of a figurehead. We can see these characteristics very clearly in the extreme and cruel Nazi Germany created by Hitler. He used lies to deter Germany’s citizens and restricted the flow of information. Independent thought and freedom of will were against the law, and the people were under constant watch to ensure they did exactly as the government wanted. “If people are to die in the war I will not spend time on them because they did not deserve better, and if we lose than I shall not show sorrow.” (Hitler Remember.org.)

There is nothing truly more terrifying than conformity in its purest form and George Orwell, the author of 1984, illustrates that point perfectly in his novel which showcases all of his ideas.  But what really causes the erasement of the individual and the subsequent rise of the ostensible status quo?  Orwell takes the time in his novel to demarcate the many causes that have an acute effect on individuality and how potently a general ‘norm’ can influence a mass of people.  Manipulation of the individual and of the masses runs rampant in this dystopian world as mandated activities like Two Minutes Hate serve to distract and confuse the people, as well as organizations like the Anti-sex league and Spies being used as indoctrination centers

Dystopian society is a way that this author shows what the future will be like when one person takes charge of a small large group. The elements of dystopian society in Divergent by Veronica Roth are limitations, corporate control, and the factions. The limitations presented in this story include the walls in which the city of Chicago is surrounded by; no one is allowed outside the fence. Another limitation is the factions, which are groups that you are put into based on your personality. You are given a test and one chance to choose a new faction that best fits your wants and needs and if you fail to choose or succeed in a faction, you become factionless. Factionless means that you don’t belong anywhere are are viewed publicly as a disgrace. The last element addressed in this story is corporate control.

Divergent movie demonstrates various transitions into adulthood. However, these transitions depict how adolescents can move from a dependent stage to an independent one. Moreover, in order for teenagers to move into adulthood, they must go through consequences and situations that present adulthood life. Tris, the main character, is the bravest person in the movie who demonstrated what an adult is and the way to accomplish adulthood life regardless of difficulties and fears. Furthermore, Tris has gone through difficult situations against her will, which through time made her a real adult at a young age, which as a result let her identity emerge. The definition of a dystopian society is “an imaginary society that is as dehumanizing and as unpleasant as possible.” What makes them this way is that the vast majority of people living in them have zero control or power over themselves, even if they think they do. The select people in the society (i.e. the government, the rich) are the one who pull the strings behind the scenes for the majority that are ‘below’ them. The ones with the power are in the minority and are vastly outnumbered by those without power, yet the systems are so efficient at control those without power do not have the will to rebel. Control is enforced through surveillance and monitoring of the actions of the citizens. There is also the fear of discipline if you are caught acting out of line. In each society there is an atmosphere of bleak helplessness and a lack of individuality. A dystopian society fits the definition of Foucault’s Panopticism, the society has an efficient, systematic control in which power is exerted by the few to control the many, although the system is not always a negative.

Dystopian literature and film has been quite a popular genre for readers. In most texts, they are set in a post-apocalyptic or dystopian world where the protagonist struggles to fit into these corrupted worlds and these protagonists rebel because they feel like the government has turned their backs on them, leaving them treated unfairly. The protagonist fight back in the hopes of restoring society to its sensible state. All the main protagonists in the plots are put into inhumane situations as they are controlled by the government in order to fit their ideas and beliefs or just the plain simple reason, for their own entertainment. Through the actions and perspective of these protagonists, it shows a reflection of how we deal with certain issues
