Dreams from my father written by; former president Barack Obama. This text shows another side to Obama that many of us has never seen of him before. In class my group and I covered chapters 12-13; our group discussed some of the ideas of Obamas character. As we discussed his experiences early in his career in the community of Chicago had helped him in the future, for his presidency. The text we read showed a lot about Obama as a person it helped me understand Obama even more. Obama is a caring man that only wants to help, for him to help the community he has to understand the problems they are facing. Obama takes time to talk to citizens in poverty-stricken areas of Chicago. I think that shows that Obama genially wants to help others and is taking his own time to properly gather a better understanding of the citizen’s problems. Also we discussed if America has grown as a country, and if the ideals from our parents have been bestowed to us their children. Has time truly changed is our current generation much different from past generations? Since Obama was young he has lived a life of struggles and hardships, from his mother and father not staying together. The constant moving around even to different parts of the world. Obama has chosen to be the example that America has seen. He has taken the hard times he has been dealt and focused on to try to help other people’s struggles. Obama had chosen to work in the community to fix the problems in Chicago. This speaks a lot of
President Barack Obama did many things to get to the positions he is at now.” Obama himself struggled with his mixed-race identity and sought to figure out how he fit in with the rest of the world”(Source B). He also had many problems growing up and many complications to get through school since he didn’t have much money. But Obama showed great appreciation for the things he had. He went out in his community becoming a great leader. Not only did he go out in his community and be a leader, But he showed great leadership, as a senate and as a president.Barack Obama was more than just an ordinary President, but he showed great leadership, hard work and cared for others than himself.
Barack Obama's powerful diction creates hope for the future of the United States with word choices such as “continue,” “shifted” and “ambitions.” Barack’s shift from informal to formal diction constructs an image of unity through the usage of simple, personal pronouns, such as “we” and “us.” The shifts from informal to formal and back appeal to the emotions of the audience because they feel as if Obama is talking directly to them. His allusions to the Bible are sentimental because when he says "the God given promise that all are equal, all are free, and all deserve a chance to pursue their full measure of happiness" he creates a bond between himself and his audience. His words have a motivating connotation that appeal to both logos and pathos. The way in which Barack Obama presents his ideas allows his audience to have confidence in him and his role as president.
Though, knowing some of Obama’s background, it seems as if he was trying to get a point across. The point I have mention before, our differences should not separate us but unite us. Obama speech is inspiring, because he mentions how we all come from different backgrounds and we have our racist view points, but these points are simply from the past in which hardly anyone today has lived in. If we could overlook all the bad from the past and the negativity from being from different communities, we could have a better and stronger nation. Obama also uses his own background as a way to show how we can overcome different ethic backgrounds. It may be hard in some ways but as he states in his speech, “These people are a part of me. And they are a part of America, this country that I love.” We are all apart of America, a country that we love, and we are surrounded by the people we love. Yes, we do come from all sorts of ethnic backgrounds, and some may be a mix of many. This is the inspiring part from his speech. Even though he gets many view points from his family and is from a mix of ethnic backgrounds, all that matters is that his family is apart of him and he loves them for who they are not the ethnicity.
The president, Barack Obama gave a speech at Howard University commencement ceremony. Speaking to the graduating class about the need to keep pushing for change he gave the students at the historically black university advise on how to shape your own future and to always strike for better. The president argues that the U.S and the world is becoming a better place than when he was a collage student. However, there is still work to be done when it comes to employment, achievements, and justice for African Americans. The president also mentions to be confident in your heritage and to aim for greatness. Also that empathy should be extended to all people who are struggling to achieve success or a goal. Furthermore, the president advised the grad

Making him really smart, all due to the hard work the school had to offer in terms of education. After the end of his High School career he then continued to remain in his studies and take them elsewhere, he went to the Occidental College in Los Angeles
In 1995 Obama published a book called Dreams from my father: a story of race and
Obama and King had a connection; they both supported non violence. These two African American Leaders, wanted peace throughout the world, and for the two races of our world today to be equal, peaceful, and not negative. “I Have A Dream” and “Victory Speech” are two amazingly powerful speeches delivered by two big leaders of the American nation: Martin Luther King and Barack Obama. These speeches were united in the hopes of creating a better country and achieving the American dream. The two discourses are an introduction to a change or to an
He first characterized his family in detail and thoroughly described their racial make up. His father is a black man from Kenya; and his mother is a white woman from Kansa. He was raised by a black grandfather who served in World War II, and a white grandmother who worked on a bomber assembly line. President Obama has also seen both ends of the spectrum as he was raised in one of the world’s poorest nations; but later went on to attend some of America’s most prestigious schools. He talked about his wife and how she is a black American woman with the blood of slaves as well as slave owners. This information about his life was a vital piece to include in his speech because it connected him with other African American’s. It gave credibility to his speech and made his message more valid. It showed America that him and his family have overcome many difficulties in life, similar to what many American’s are trying to, commonly referred to as “the American dream.” His own “American story” was very beneficial to include because it brought forth a great deal of emotion from voters, especially African American voters. By incorporating details that raised emotions, he was able to connect
Obama addressed to a crowd of mixed gender, race, and understanding of their own feelings towards our country. He spoke of the American Identity and story and how it defines the people who live in America. He said, “Look at our history. We are Lewis and Clark and Sacagawea, pioneers who braved the unfamiliar, followed by a stampede of farmers and miners, and entrepreneurs and hucksters. That’s our spirit.
From the beginning of time , race has seem to be a topic of discussion. There has always been reoccurrences in history about race problems and skin tone issues. Many thought the Civil Rights era would bring a end to race issues in America but that was just a pseudo. By reading , Dreams from my Father , one can get the sense of the struggle for identity and finding a place of belonging. The United States can not escape the historical legacy that it has built over the years when dealing with race. Obama’s famous quote in the book proclaims , “My identity might begin with the fact of my race, but it didn’t, couldn’t, end there (Obama 111). This famous quote signifies Obama need to know more about him; he is proclaiming that although race and ethnicity is just a slight image of who you are , there are many externalities that influence ones identity and how they are formed as a person. Race is something that might always be apart of your identity , but just knowing your race isn’t critically thinking deep enough . One must search deep into their roots in order to understand their true indeitiy and where they belong in this tangled world. During this book, Obama searched sin Kenya for faith, hope , and inspiration through his African ancestry.
Barack Obama states that his family is one of the most diverse families. This particular trait of the family teaches him that although his family members are scattered and belong to different parts of the world, they all carry the same blood, which brings them together, making them one. The main point he tries to
From the beginning of his speech he states “I want a man who…”. He repeats this phrase several times to get the point across of how deeply President Obama feels for not only the United States but every individual of the United States. He uses this to convince the audience that everything that drives President Obama is the heart and soul he has for the American people. How his main goal is for the advancement of not just one person or one race of the people but everyone; no matter what you are or how you live your life he wants you to feel he wants what is best for you. This strategy was very effective and it allowed for the connection to be made between President Obama and the American
Many people would never have thought to see the day in which an African American would become President. The man chosen to make a difference would be Barack Obama, senator of Illinois. In his presidential campaign of 2008, Senator Obama gave an impactful speech, known as “A More Perfect Union”, to the country. His purpose was to widen the race divide that the nation as a whole has been avoiding for years. In his address, senator Obama uses parallelism, an urgent tone, and his purpose to his effective speech.
Barack Obama’s Dreams From My Father is exactly what it claims to be by title, a story of race and identity. Barack Obama comes from a diverse background, which he explores throughout the book. Having a white American mother and black Kenyan father, he has a different experience than the majority of people in society when it comes to race and identity, however still it seems similar to the experience of many blacks as described in William E. Cross’s Black Psychological theory, the Nigresence Model of Racial Identity Development. While Obama’s experience does not necessarily occur in chronological order according to Cross’s model, in my opinion, it portrays a good example of how someone enters each stage of
In the memoir “Dream from my father" by Barack Obama and in the biography "The life you imagine" Derek Jeter with Jack Curry both authors showed respectively used figurative language to convey their experiences, challenges and goals. However, Jeter also used colloquial language whereas Obama used academic language.
